Winslow Bulldogs win three, lose two at Wolves Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs won three games and lost two at the Wolves Classic Tournament over the past weekend. The Bulldogs defeated Globe 6-3 in their first game on Friday, lost to Show Low 13-7 later that day and dropped a heartbreaker 5-4 to Estrella Foothills that night. On Saturday, the Bulldogs defeated Holbrook 14-10 and Payson 18-8 to finish the tournament on a winning note and improve their season's record to 10-6.

In the Globe game Chris Garrett got the win allowing three unearned runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Globe scored in the top of the first on an error and a single. Winslow took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on a single  by Vittorio Sells, a double by Colton Corum, a walk and an error. A double by Vicenzio Sells and a single by Vittorio Sells In the second inning increased the lead to 3-1. The Winslow fourth saw the lead expanded to 6-1 on two walks, two errors and a single by Matt Smith. Glove scored the last two runs of the game in the fifth inning on two errors and a double by Tim Wiley. The Bulldogs hung on for the 6-3 victory.

Vittorio Sells was two for four at the plate for the Bulldogs. Matthew Smith and Rhett Hardy were one for two. Vicenzio Sells was one for three with a double. Scott Corum was one for four with a double.

In the 13-7 loss to Show Low, Sam Setalla took the loss giving up eight runs, only two of which were earned, on four hits and four walks. Vittorio Sells worked three innings and gave up five unearned runs on two hits and three walks. Matt Cirre worked a perfect inning in relief.

Winslow started strong with a two runs in the first inning on singles by Matt Smith and Vicenzio Sells and an error and another in the second for a 3-0 lead on a double by Vittorio Sells and singles by Colton Corum and Matt Smith. Show Low cut the lead to 3-1 in the second on a single, two walks and a balk. Winslow upped the lead to 7-1 in the top of the third on a walk, a hit batsman, a double by Matt Cirre, two more walks and a single by Matt Smith. Show Low struck back hard with an 11 run bottom of the third on five errors, two walks, a hit batsman, a single, double and two home runs. The Cougars got their final run I the fifth inning on an error and a sacrifice.

Matt Smith led the Bulldogs at the plate with a three for four day.  Vicenzio Sells was two for four with a double. Vittorio Sells and Rhett Hardy were both one for three with each having a double. James Martinez was also one for three. Matt Cirre was on d for four with a double. Colton Corum was also one for four.

In the 5-4 loss to Estrella Foothills, Matt Smith went the full seven innings and took the tough loss. He gave up five runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman while fanning eight.

Estrella took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a hit batsman, a single and a sacrifice. The Wolves increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third on a hit batsman, a single and an error. Winslow went up 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a single by James Martinez, a double by Vittorio Sells, a double by Colton Corum and a single by Jevon Estelle. The Bulldogs went up 4-2 in the top of the sixth on a single by Jevon Estelle and an error. Estrella scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth on two singles, a walk and a triple.

Jevon Estelle was two for three with a double against Estrella. Vittorio Sells was two for four with a double and a triple. Colton Corum was two for four with a double. Johnnie Woods and James Martinez were one for three.

In the 14-10 win over Holbrook, Avery Dashee started and gave up one run on three hits and a walk in one inning of work. Jevon Estelle worked three innings and gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks. Colton Corum worked two thirds of an inning and gave up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk. Matt Cirre got the win in relief working two and a third innings and giving up one unearned run on one hit.

Holbrook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk, a double and two singles. The lead was increased to 2-0 in the second inning on a walk and two singles. Winslow struck for a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second on three walks, a hit batsman and singles by Vittorio Sells and Colton Corum. Singles by Rhett Hardy and Johnny Woods increased the margin to 5-2 in the third inning. Holbrook tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth on a walk, a hit batsman and three singles. Winslow went up 6-5 in the bottom of the frame on a hit batsman, a walk and an error. Holbrook made it 9-6 with a four run fifth on two singles, two walks and an error.

Winslow got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a hit batsman, a walk and an interference call. The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game. There were four walks and error and two singles Jevon Estelle and one by Johnnie Woods in the rally. Holbrook scored its last run in the bottom of the seventh on an error and a triple.

James Martinez got the win against Payson working four innings and giving up two unearned runs on one hit and five walks.

Vicenzio Sells worked an inning in relief and gave up six runs, four of which were earned, on four hits and three walks.

Winslow took a 3-0 lead in the first on two errors, a single by Colton Corum and a double by Rhett Hardy. A 10 run third inning gave the Bulldogs a commanding lead. Two walks, a hit batsman, three errors, triples by Matt Smith Jevon Estelle and singles by Vittorio Sells, Colton Corum, and Matt Smith. Payson cut the margin to 13-2 in the fourth inning on a walk and a single. Winslow went up 18-2 in the top of the fifth on three errors, a walk and singles by Jevon Estelle, Rhett Hardy and Johnnie Woods. Payson scored six times in the bottom of the fifth but that was not enough to keep the game from being ended due to the 10 run mercy rule. The Longhorns scored on two walks, two singles, an error and a double.

Jevon Estelle and Rhett Hardy were both two for three with Estelle having a triple and Hardy a double. Matthew Smith and Colton Corum were two for four with Smith having a double. Johnnie Woods and Colton Corum were one for three.

Winslow was to host Holbrook on Tuesday and will host Show Low on Friday. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will meet Monument Valley in a double header at Kayenta at noon.
