Bulldogs defeat Tuba City 51-13 in first 3A North game

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 3A North Region season with a 51-13 victory over the Tuba City Warriors at Winslow on Friday, Sept. 3. The win was the first of the year for the Bulldogs and evened their season record at 1-1. The Warriors fell to 0-2 for the season and 0-1 in the region. No other 3A North Region team has played a regional game.

Wendell Carter scored the first four touchdowns for the Bulldogs, all in the first half and had two scores negated by penalties. The Bulldogs also picked up two safeties in the first half as they had built a 38-0 lead by the intermission.

Carter scored his first touchdown on a 10 yard run on Winslow's first possession. The conversion by Josh Cirre made the score 7-0. Three minutes later Carter scored on a 30-yard run and the conversion increased the lead to 14-0. The defense accounted for the next score as J. T. Estrada blocked a Tuba City punt out of the end zone for a safety giving the Bulldogs a 16-0 lead. Carter completed the first period scoring on a two yard run and the conversion gave the Bulldogs a 23-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Carter had a 62-yard touchdown on a punt return negated by a clipping penalty early in the second quarter, the first of two touchdowns he had erased by penalties. The Bulldogs saw their defense score again as they tackled the Tuba City quarterback in the end zone for the second safety of the game and a 25-0 lead.

Estrada blocked a punt for the second time to account for a score as this one was recovered by Aaron Martin for a touchdown and a 31-0 lead after the Cirre's conversion. Carter had a 28-yard touchdown run negated by a penalty but just a few plays later he scored on a 23-yard run. The conversion failed and Winslow led 38-0 at the intermission.

The first score of the second half came on a 10-yard pass from Payden Zufelt to Tyler Williams. The conversion by Cirre made the score 45-0. The Bulldogs completed their scoring when Jared Powell scored from a yard out late in the third period to increase the lead to 51-0 as the conversion was blocked. Most of the second half was played by the Winslow bench players and junior varsity players up for the varsity game.

Tuba City scored on a muffled punt by the Bulldogs and converted to cut the lead to 51-7. The Warriors stayed game despite being outmanned and short of players and scored again on a 16-yard pass from Shane Slim to Jared Jim. The conversion failed and Winslow still led 51-13.

Winslow dominated the statistics and held the Warriors to negative rushing yardage.

The Bulldogs were to host the Snowflake Lobos on Friday in a non-regional game. The 3A East Region Lobos are 2-0 for the season with a pair of non-regional victories. On Friday, Snowflake defeated the Holbrook Roadrunners of the 3A North Region. This Friday, Winslow will host Ganado in a regional game.

The Tuba City Warriors were off on Friday but will be at Window Rock this Friday for a regional game with the Scouts.
