Winslow Bulldogs claw Coconino Panthers

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Coconino Panthers 45-16 in a non-regtional football game played in Flagstaff on Friday. The win improved Winslow's record to 7-2 for the season. The Bulldogs remained 5-0 in the 3A North Region  and can wrap up a regional championship next Friday with a win over the Monument Valley Mustangs at Kayenta.

The  Bulldogs scored twice in the first quarter. Kraig Shirley ran nine yards to complete a long drive but the conversion failed and Winslow led 6-0. The Bulldogs went on another scoring drive and Kraig again ran nine yards for the touchdown. Again the conversion failed and Winslow led 12-0 going into the second period.

Shirley scored his third touchdown of the game on a 27 yard run in the second quarter. He then passed to Payden Zyfelt for the two point conversion and a 20-0 lead.

The final score of the first half came on a 39 yard pass from Shirley to Bubba Cuellar. The conversion failed and the Bulldogs took a 26-0 lead to the locker room.

Shirley and the Bulldogs were still in control in the second half as Shirley got his fourth touchdown on a three yard run and Wendell Carter scored on a one-yard plunge to complete drives. Aaron Martin booted the conversion after the second touchdown of the quarter for a 39-0 lead.

Carter got Winslow's final score on an 11 yard run. The conversion failed and the game was decided with Winslow playing mostly underclassmen with a 45-0 lead.

The Panthers scored twice in the final quarter against the Winslow bench on a one yard run and a 68 yard dash. The two point conversions made the final score 45-16.

The Bulldogs journey to Kayenta on Friday to meet the Monument Valley Mustangs with a chance to clinch the 3A North Region Championship. Monument Valley could tie for the championship with Winslow and probably Holbrook with a win.
