WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Window Rock Scouts 41-13 in an important 3A North Region football game played in Window Rock on Friday. The win improved Winslow's record to 5-2 for the season and a perfect 5-0 in the region. Window Rock fell to 5-3 for the season and 1-2 in the region. The victory clinched at least a tie for the regional championship for the Bulldogs and the only way they could not be regional champions would be if Monument Valley defeats them in the season's final game and also has defeated Window Rock on Oct. 15.
Winslow drove 77 yards in 13 plays and scored on a 15 yard run by Wendell Carter. Josh Cirre booted the conversion for a 7-0 lead that was the only score of the quarter. Winslow had had what would have been a James Martinez to Kraig Shirley 70 yard scoring pass wiped out by a penalty prior to the score.
The Bulldogs scored 28 points in the second quarter to turn what was otherwise a close game into a rout.
Kraig Shirley ran five yards to score on a fourth and goal play midway through the second period. The conversion kick was blocked and Winslow led 13-0. Window Rock fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Kelly Wood recovered for the Bulldogs. Carter ran 27 yards for his second touchdown. A conversion pass failed and Winslow led 19-0.
Window Rock cut the lead to 19-6 just seconds later when Nick Davis ran a brilliant 69 yards to score. The conversion run failed. Winslow had another apparent touchdown on a Martinez to Payden Zufelt pass negated by a penalty.
Martinez hit Shirley with an eight yard scoring pass late in the quarter and Carter ran for the two point conversion and a 27-6 lead. With less than a minute left until the intermission, the Bulldogs hit a 54m yard pass to set up a 10 yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Carter with just five seconds left in the half. Carter again ran for the two point conversion and a 35-6 half time lead.
The Scouts played well enough in the second half to keep the half time margin the same but the results were never in doubt. The huge second quarter had given the Bulldogs all the edge they needed to insure a solid victory.
The third quarter was scoreless though both teams threatened and were hurt by interceptions. Carter got Winslow's only second half touchdown on a 62 yard run midway through the final period. The conversion kick failed and the Bulldogs led 41-6.
The Scouts ended the scoring on a 10 yard run by Davis. The conversion by kicker Dipke was good and the 41-13 final was on the scoreboard.
Winslow dominated the statistics with 523 yards gained to just 176 for the Scouts. The Bulldogs had 316 yards rushing led by Wendell Carter's 251 yard total. Window Rock rush for 140 yards, mostly by Davis. The Bulldogs had 207 yard passing while the Scouts only picked up 36 yards in the air.
Winslow will host Sedona Red Rock in a non-regional game on Friday which is designated as Senior Day. The Scorpions were winless for the season with a record of six straight losses going into Friday's game with Wickenburg. Window Rock will be at Monument Valley in a game that could well determine which, if either, of those teams earns a berth in the state playoffs. Monument Valley defeated Chinle 21-14 at Chinle to keep its playoff hopes alive.
