Basketball: Winslow boys, girls teams win at Payson

PAYSON, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs basketball teams won their games at Payson on Nov. 23. The wins evened their records at 1-1 as both had lost at Flagstaff on Monday.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs took an easy 83-29 win over the Payson Lady Longhorns in the first varsity game of the night. The Lady Bulldogs started fast and built a 20-4 lead in the first quarter.  The margin was 50-12 at the intermission and 67-21 after three quarters.

Felencia Keams led all scorers with 25 points for Winslow. Mattea Begaii with 18 points and Corey Nez with 10 were also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs. Jayme Carlon led Payson with 13 points.

The Lady Bulldogs were to meet the Snowflake Lady Lobos in Snowflake on Tuesday and will participate in the Gallup Invitational Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

In the boys' game, the Bulldogs defeated the Payson Longhorns 60-48. The Bulldogs mounted a tremendous comeback effort after a bad first quarter to secure the victory.

Payson led by double figures 18-8 after the first quarter but the Bulldogs battled back to within three by the intermission trailing 27-24. Winslow led by two 39-37 entering the final period and pulled away in that quarter as they outscored the Longhorns 21-11.

Kraig Shirley led all scorers with 19 points for the Bulldogs. Winslow had two more players in double figures in Tyler Williams with 15 points and Tremayne Nez with 13. Tanner Hunter led Payson with 15 points and Zack Blazer added 13 for the Longhorns.

Winslow was to play at Snowflake on Tuesday and will host the Cake Chevrolet Shootout Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
