Blue Ridge Yellowjackets to meet Show Low Cougars for state title
The Blue Ridge Yellowjackets defeated the Florence Gophers convincingly 49-7 in the first Arizona 3A Conference Football Championship playoffs semi-final game.
The win meant that the Yellowjackets will once again meet the Show Low Cougars for the championship next Saturday.
The Show Low Cougars defeated the Snowflake Lobos 42-21 to earn their spot in the championship game. Blue Ridge defeated Show Low for the championship last season and bested the Cougars 36-18 when the teams met at Pinetop in the regular season. Blue Ridge won the 3A East Region Championship and remains undefeated.
The loss to the Yellowjackets was Show Low's only loss in the regular season, but despite the loss, the Cougars were the top seed in the playoffs by the Arizona Interscholastic Association's (AIA) power point system.
Blue Ridge, despite being undefeated and defeating Show Low in their regular season meeting was second in the power point system.
Once again the finals will be between two 3A East Region teams, which had five teams in the playoffs and only one of those five lost to a team from another region in the playoffs. Payson lost to Round Valley 34-14 in the first round and Round Valley became the only 3A East Region team to lose to another region team with a 35-21 loss to Florence.
The championship game will be closer for northern Arizona fans as it will be played at the Northern Arizona University Walkup Sky Dome at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27.
There will be a 2A Conference Championship Game at 1 p.m. there between Yuma Catholic, a 22-20 winner over Thatcher and Northwest Christian, a 42-13 winner over St. Johns.
