Winslow Schools present Native American awards
In all, 226 students recognized during ceremony

WINSLOW, Ariz. - On May 10, the Indian Education Advisory Committee presented awards and scholarships to Native American students in the Winslow School District. Awards were given from grades kindergarten through 12. The four categories of awards established were, Academics, Citizenship, Fine Arts and Cultural. In all, 226 students received awards. Some students received awards in more than one category.

Miriam Stacey is the current chairperson of the Indian Education Advisory committee. She was the event moderator introducing the structure and participants.

The event was held in the Winslow High School Performing Arts Center. Parents and students filed the center, and as their names were called, each student went on-stage to receive their certificate. The award certificates were presented by the principals of each school.

Jana Jordan is a Teacher Representative who also presented seven graduating seniors with scholarships supported from various fundraising events and donations.

The guest speaker, Keisha Whitehair, closed the ceremony with an inspirational message for all the students. Whitehair is going on to Columbia University next fall with a complete four year scholarship she obtained unrelated to this awards ceremony. Her message to the students was one of encouragement to overcome temporary feelings of fear and continue their pursuit of self-excellence.
