Bulldogs declaw Chinle Wildcats

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Chinle Wildcats 10-0 in a 3A North Region baseball game on Tuesday. The win improved Winslow's record to 6-0 for the young season. The Bulldogs were to play home games with Snowflake on Thursday and Tuba City on Friday.

Tommy Gomez went the distance for the win in a game shortened to six innings due to the 10 run mercy rule. He allowed no runs on four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a three run homer by Ty Hancock following a triple by Anthony Huerta and a walk. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when seven runs scored on seven hits, a walk and an error to reach the mercy rule ending.

Hancock and Jevon Estelle were two for three for the Bulldogs with Hancock having the home run. Carlos Gonzales was one for one. Huerta was two for four with a double and a triple. Gomez was also two for four with a double. Levi Smith, Bubba Cuellar and Vittorio Sells were all one for three. Jevon Estelle was one for four.

Lady Bulldogs tame Lady Wildcats

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Chinle Lady Wildcats 10-0 in a 3A North Region softball game played on Tuesday. The win was Winslow's fourth and their second in the region. The Lady Bulldogs are off to an impressive start with excellent pitching and quality hitting. The team was headed for a tournament at Payson on the weekend that could provide a good test for the Lady Bulldogs.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Winslow struck for five runs on two hits, a walk and three costly errors. Three runs scored in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and an error. The game was called due to the 10 run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning when Winslow scored twice on three hits.

Jennifer Yazzie worked the first four innings and allowed no runs or hits and just one walk. She fanned 10 Lady Wildcats. Kelly Pugh worked the final inning and did not allow a base runner while striking out two batters.

Mallory Smith had a triple in her only at bat. Haley Hancock doubled in her only appearance at the plate. Kyli Parsons singled in her only at bat. Yazzie was two for three with a triple. Arianna Huerta was also two for three. Gabby Stacey was one for two. Felicia Nagle was one for three with a triple.
