SOFTBALL: Lady Bulldogs edge Lady Longhorns

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Payson Lady Longhorns 6-5 in a non-regional softball game played in Winslow on Thursday. The win was Winslow's third in as many outings.

The winning run scored on a popup to the catcher with one out in the eighth inning. Melissa Jacobs tagged up at third and raced home when no one covered the plate on the short pop fly that was the second out of the inning. Jacobs had reached base on an error and advanced to third on a passed ball and a stolen base.

Jennifer Yazzie worked the full eight innings and was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs. She allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits and five walks. She fanned 15 batters.

Winslow took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a single by Yazzie, a double by Jacobs and a Payson error. The margin grew to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on singles by Gabby Stacey, Felecia Nagle and Yazzie.

Payson knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning on four hits, a walk and an error. Both teams scored in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. Payson scored on two walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball. Winslow tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on three Payson errors and a walk.

The final run came when Jacobs reached on an error in the outfield, Rebecca Perez walked and both advanced on a passed ball. Mireya Ulibarri then hit the pop fly that resulted in the winning run when nobody covered the plate.

Jacobs and Yazzie were both two for four at the plate with Jacobs having a double. Stacey and Nagle were each one for three.

The Winslow girls were to host Chinle on Tuesday before entering the Payson Invitational Tournament of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The tournament should provide the toughest challenges yet for the Lady Bulldogs with Payson being one of the better teams there and anxious for revenge.
