BASEBALL: Bulldogs nip Payson Longhorns, 4-3

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Payson Longhorns 4-3 in a non-regional baseball game played in Winslow on March 11. The win improved Winslow's record to a perfect 5-0 for the young season. The Bulldogs have three more home games set for this week with Chinle on Tuesday, Snowflake on Thursday and Tuba City on Friday. Both Chinle and Tuba City games are 3A North Region contests.

Tommy Gomez got the win in relief working four innings and surrendering one run on two hits and a walk in four innings of work. Sean Pugh had started on the mound for the Bulldogs and gave up two earned runs on five hits and a walk in three innings.

Payson took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three singles.

The Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The scoring happened when Levi Smith reached on an error, Gomez doubled and both scored on a single by Jevon Estelle who scored on a single by Matthew Smith. Vittorio Sells reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error.

Payson cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth on an error and a single.

At the plate for Winslow, Matthew Smith was two for two with a double. Gomez was two for three with a double. Estelle was one for three as was Ty Hancock.
