SOFTBALL: Lady Bulldogs snuff out Greyhills Lady Knights, Tuba City Lady Warriors

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs began their 2010 season with a 15-0 win over the Greyhills Lady Knights on Tuesday, March 2 and then blanked the Tuba City Lady Warriors 10-0 on Thursday, March 4.

Against Greyhills, sophomore Kelly Pugh worked the first three innings and did not allow a base runner. She had five strikeouts. Mallory Smith worked the next inning and also did not allow a hit or a walk while fanning two batters. Jennifer Yazzie worked the final inning and was also perfect with a pair of strikeouts. The three Lady Bulldogs combined to pitch a perfect game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Against Greyhills, the Lady Bulldogs put the game away early with a nine run first inning. Yazzie led the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with three hits in four trips to the plate including two doubles and a triple. Melissa Jacobs was two for two with a double. Mireya Ulibarri was two for three with a double.  Bernice Gover was also two for three. Kyli Parsons and Gabby Stacey were both one for two. Arianna Huerta was one for three.

Tuba City did not score in the 10-0 Winslow win on Thursday. Jennifer Yazzie worked the full five innings of the game which was also shortened by the 10 run mercy rule.

The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning on two walks and an error, and then increased the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning on three hits and three errors. Three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning increased the margin to 9-0. The final run that allowed the game to be ended by the mercy rule scored in the bottom of the fifth inning on a walk and three stolen bases.

Winslow took full advantage of five Tuba City errors as the Lady Bulldogs only had five hits in the contest. Kyli Parsons had the only extra base hit, a triple in two trips to the plate.  Rebecca Perez was also one for two. Jennifer Yazzie, Arianna Huerta and Melissa Jacobs were all one for three.
