The Hopi High School radio broadcast and journalism clubs are raising funds so they can attend the national Journalism Education Association Conference in Portland, Ore., April 14-18. There are workshops at the conference so they can learn from professional broadcasters and print journalists.
The trip will cost approximately $1,200 per person for the airfare, hotel, food and other amenities. Hopi High School will match the money that the club raises. Any donations are appreciated.
The Hopi High School radio club performs the only live remote Native American teen talk show in the nation from 1:30-2 p.m. on Thursdays when the radio club members interview teachers, administrators, community members and classmates on KUYI, located at 88.1 FM.
KUYI is the Hopi community radio station. The students work closely with KUYI Station Manager Richard Davis and Operations Manager Davis Maho. The advanced Hopi High radio students perform a teen show on Tuesday and also go to the station periodically to learn how to use radio editing equipment with the help of Maria Garcia.
Those who want to help the students, but cannot attend the concert can send checks to Hopi High Journalism, P.O. Box 337, Keams Canyon, AZ 86034.
