Winslow vs. Monument Valley
Lady Mustangs defeat Lady Bulldogs by one point
KAYENTA, Ariz. - The Monument Valley Lady Mustangs defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 64-63 in a 3A North Region basketball game played on Saturday. The win improved Monument Valley's regional record to 4-1. Winslow's record fell to 15-4 for the season and 3-2 in the 3A North Region. These two teams had close games decided in the final seconds in the Arizona State 3A Conference Championship Game last season and the Winslow Winter Classic Championship Game in December. Both trail Window Rock in the 3A North Region at this time.
The Lady Mustangs built a 16-10 lead in the first quarter and still led 33-28 at the intermission. The lead cut to two points at 49-47 after three quarters.
The score was tied in the closing seconds and Winslow had a lead at 63-62 with three seconds left but Bradley Nash sank a pair of free throws to decide the game just before the final buzzer.
Nash led all scorers with 28 points for the Lady Mustangs. Nicolette Parish was also in double figures for Monument Valley with 11 points. Chelsea Holiday and Destinee Holiday each tallied eight points for the victors.
Kourtney Shirley with 24 points and Felencia Keams with 21 points were in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs. Shernise Ward scored eight for Winslow.
The Lady Bulldogs were slated to play a regional game at Holbrook on Tuesday and non-regional games at Valley Sanders on Friday and Show Low on Saturday.
Boys game
The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Monument Valley Mustangs 57-35 in a 3A North Region basketball game played at Kayenta on Saturday. The victory improved Winslow's record to 20-4 for the season and 5-1 in the region. Monument Valley's regional record fell to 2-3 with the loss. The Bulldogs moved into second place in the 3A North Region behind Chinle which is 6-0 in the 3A North Region.
The Bulldogs raced to a 21-13 first quarter lead that had increased to 29-20 at the intermission. The advantage was 46-27 after three quarters.
Micheaux Begaii paced the Bulldogs with 13 points. Dale Dixon scored 12 for Winslow on four three-point shots. Kraig Shirley and Lakota Shirley each scored nine points for the Bulldogs. Shane Begay was the only Mustang in double figures with 12 points.
Winslow was scheduled to play the Holbrook Roadrunners in a regional game on Tuesday at Holbrook and non-regional contests on Friday at Valley Sanders and at Show Low on Saturday.
Winslow vs. Ganado
Lady Bulldogs victorious over Lady Hornets
GANADO, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Ganado Lady Hornets 54-48 in a 3A North Region basketball game played on Thursday. The win improved Winslow's record to 15-3 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs are 3-1 in the 3A North Region. Ganado fell to 9-10 for the season and 1-5 in the region.
The Lady Bulldogs built a 10 point 17-7 lead in the first quarter but saw that advantage cut to three points at 27-24 by the intermission. The lead was 44-38 after three quarters. The fourth quarter saw both teams score 10 points and Winslow walk off with the victory.
Kourtney Shirley led all scorers with 23 points for Winslow. Shernise Ward was also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points. Jasmine Taliman paced the Lady Hornets with 20 points. Cory Slim was also in double figures for Ganado with 13 points.
Bulldogs edge Hornets in overtime
The Winslow Bulldogs won a 71-70 overtime thriller from the Ganado Hornets in a 3A North Region basketball game played on Thursday. The win improved Winslow's record to 19-4 for the season and 4-1 in the 3A North Region. Ganado fell to 1-6 in the region. The loss was a tough one for the Hornets who have lost five of their six regional losses by less than 10 points.
The Bulldogs led 19-15 after the first period but trailed 29-25 at the intermission. The evenly played game saw the visiting Bulldogs retake the lead at 45-43 in the decisive third quarter. The Hornets stayed close and the game was not decided even at the final buzzer. The teams were tied at 62-62 after regulation. Winslow won the overtime period by a single point to claim the victory.
Marcus Begay of Ganado was the game's high scorer with 28 points. He was joined in double figures by teammates Dwand Begay with 15 points and Sherwin Hale with 13 points.
Kraig Shirley led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Jaken Yazzie and Lakota Shirley were also in double figures with 11 points each and Dale Dixon scored nine for Winslow.
The key to the victory was probably Winslow's success at the charity stripe where they hit 17 of 31 attempts while Ganado only had nine tries of which six were successful.

Lady Cougars
WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs cruised to an easy 75-23 victory over the Show Low Lady Cougars in a non-regional basketball game played on Tuesday. The win improved Winslow's record to 14-3 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs are 2-1 in the 3A North Region. Show Low fell to 5-14 in the season.
The Lady Bulldogs built a 20 point
28-8 lead in the first quarter and were never threatened after that. The margin was
30-15 at the intermission and 61-17 after three quarters.
Shernise Ward led all scorers with 11 points for Winslow. Tatum Charley and Corey Nez were also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points each. Twelve Lady Bulldogs scored and three had eight points, the same as Show Low's top scorer Rebekah Haley. Only six Lady Cougars scored.
Boys game
The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Show Low Cougars 57-44 in a non-regional basketball game played on Tuesday. The win improved Winslow's record to 18-4 for the season. The team is 3-1 in the 3A North Region.
Show Low enjoyed a good first quarter and had a 14-10 lead going into the second period. The Bulldogs erased that margin and had built a 26-24 lead by the intermission. Winslow continued to play well in the second half and led 43-36 after the third quarter and pull away in the final period.
Rathen Ricedorff of Show Low was the game's high scorer with 16 points but was the only Cougar in double figures. Orrin Dazen had nine points for the visitors.
Dale Dixon with 15 points and Kraig Shirley with 13 were in double figures for the Bulldogs as was Micheaux Begaii with 10 points. Winslow also had 10 players score to only seven for the Cougars.
Winslow vs. Window Rock
Lady Scouts defeat Lady Bulldogs
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Window Rock Lady Scouts handed the Winslow Lady Bulldogs their first 3A North Region defeat on Monday at Window Rock with a 52-47 win over the tough visitors from the south. The win improved Window Rock's record to 12-3 for the season. The Lady Scouts are 4-0 in the 3A North Region after the victory. Winslow fell to 12-3 for the season and 2-1 in the region. Both teams were in the final four in the state tournament last year and are expected to be there again this season.
Winslow had a one point 12-11 lead after the first quarter but trailed 24-21 at the intermission. Window Rock had a productive third quarter and upped their lead to 39-30 during that period. Winslow cut into the margin in the final quarter but the damage had been done.
Ashley Mitchell led Window Rock with a game high 19 points. Coralie Clark was also in double figures for the Lady Scouts with 12 points.
Winslow had three players in double digits led by Shernise Ward with 17 points. Paige Shirley with 12 points and Kourtney Shirley with 10 also scored in double digits for the Lady Bulldogs who only had two other players score.
Bulldogs slip by Scouts
The Winslow Bulldogs edged the Window Rock Scouts 47-46 in a very tight 3A North Region basketball game played in Window Rock on Monday, Jan. 11. The win improved Winslow's record to 17-4 for the season and their 3A North Region record to 3-1 in the young season.
The game was tied at 9-9 after the first quarter. The second quarter was almost as closely played and ended with the Scouts holding a two point 24-22 advantage. Winslow had its best period and took a 32-28 lead in the third quarter. The Scouts cut the margin to a single point but the Bulldogs managed to hold on to take the one point 47-46 win.
Three players shared high point honors as Kraig Shirley and Lakota Shirley of Winslow and Todd Perkins of Window Rock all scored 12 points apiece. Dwight Tabaha of Window Rock was also in double figures with 10 points.
