Lady Bulldogs trounce Chinle Lady Wildcats

CHINLE, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Chinle Lady Wildcats 67-34 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Chinle on Monday, Feb. 1. The win improved Winslow's record to 6-3 in the region and to 19-4 for the season. Winslow remained in the running for at least second place in the region with two games remaining on Tuesday against Tuba City and Friday against Monument Valley, both contests to be played in Winslow. Window Rock has virtually clinched the regular season regional title but the Lady Bulldogs and Monument Valley are still in a close battle for second place.

The Lady Bulldogs led 14-10 after the first quarter and 29-20 at the intermission. The third quarter saw the lead grow to a commanding 47-27 and the margin grew even more in the final period.

Kourtney Shirley led all scorers with 21 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Jennifer Yazzie was also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points. Twelve players scored for Winslow to only six for Chinle. The Lady Wildcats were led by Nicole Tsosie with 15 points. She was the only Chinle player in double figures.

The regional tournament was to be played in Chinle this week. It seems likely the Winslow, Monument Valley and Window Rock will all be qualified for the state tournament with Tuba City also a likely qualifier but a lower seed.
