FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Jesse Trujillo of Tuba City, will don his cap and gown this month having earned more than just his diploma. He received a distinguished award from Northern Arizona University honoring his academic performance, leadership and service to the community during his undergraduate studies.

Trujillo, a microbiology major and graduate of Greyhills Academy High School, was among 20 graduating seniors receiving the prestigious Gold Axe Award on Nov. 17.

The tradition of the Gold Axe Award dates back to 1933, a year after the axe was adopted as the symbol for Lumberjack athletics, when NAU began awarding small gold axe pins to outstanding members of the student body.

More than 2,400 Northern Arizona University seniors and graduate students will be conferred with their bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at graduation ceremonies to be held Dec. 17 in Flagstaff.
