Hoops: Lady Bulldogs win, Bulldogs lose at Snowflake

SNOWFLAKE, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won and the Bulldog boys lost their basketball games at Snowflake on Nov. 30. The results left the Lady Bulldogs with a 2-1 record while the Winslow boys fell to 1-2 for the young season.

The Lady Bulldogs cruised past the Snowflake Lady Lobos 86-39 in the non-regional basketball game.

Snowflake started strong and led 17-16 after the first quarter. That was the only time the home team scored in double figures as the Lady Bulldogs took over the game in the second quarter and pulled away for the rest of the contest. The lead was 38-23 at the half and 73-31 after three quarters.

Winslow had five girls in double figures and two more with nine points. Corey Nez led all scorers with 16 points while Mattea Begaii and Taramika Lee each scored 11 and both Kiersten Nezzie and Tatum Charley tallied 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Felencia Keams and Mallory Smith each scored nine points for the winners. Alex Merrill  was the only Lady Lobo in double figures with 11 points.

The Lady Bulldogs were to play in the Gallup Invitational Tournament in Gallup, N.M. on Thursday Friday and Saturday and host the Show Low Lady Cougars in their first home appearance tonight.

Boys game

In the boys' game the Winslow Bulldogs fell behind the Snowflake Lobos by a big margin in the first quarter and never made up the difference in their non-regional contest.

The Lobos built a

21-9 lead in their first quarter dominance but the Bulldogs cut into that margin with a good second period and trailed only 29-24 at the intermission. Snowflake led 45-38 after three quarters and walked away with the victory after a nearly even fourth quarter.

Kraig Shirley paced the Bulldogs and led all scorers with 20 points. Tyler Williams with 15 points and Jevon Estelle with a dozen were also in double figures for Winslow but only six Bulldogs scored compared to eight Lobos.

Michael Bondsum led Snowflake with 18 points. Trevor Reddick and Reggie Peterson each scored a dozen points and Chase Walden was also in double figures for the Lobos with 10 points.

The Bulldogs hosted the Cake Chevrolet Shootout Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
