Winslow Bulldogs top Tuba City and Ganado
WINSLOW and GANADO, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Tuba City Warriors
17-4 in a 3A North Region baseball game played in Winslow on Tuesday, April 13 and the Ganado Hornets 15-0 in Ganado on Thursday. The wins left the Bulldogs with a 15-4 record for the season.
Sedale Flanagan got the win against Tuba City, working six innings and allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on 11 hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Johnnie Wood worked the scoreless final inning in relief. At Ganado, Gomez got the win allowing only two hits and a walk in three innings with five strikeouts. Matthew Smith worked the final two innings and allowed only one hit.
Against Tuba City, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three hits. Tuba City scored in the bottom of the second on a hit and an error but Winslow had increased the lead to 4-0 in the top of the frame 4-1 on two more hits and three walks. The margin grew to 8-1 in the third inning on two hits, an error and three walks. Tuba City got the rest of its scoring in the bottom of the fourth on four hits to cut the lead to 10-4. The Bulldogs had increased the margin to 10-1 in the top of the fourth on a hit, a walk and an error. The Bulldogs scored again in the top of the fifth on a hit batsman and two walks then put the game away with a six run top of the seventh to complete the scoring.
Winslow pounded out 12 hits with Anthony Huerta being three for four to lead the pack. Tommy Gomez and Rhett Hardy were two for three with Hardy having a pair of doubles. Levi Smith was two for four with a double. Woods was one for two. Jevon Estelle was one for four and Vittorio Sells was one for five.
At Ganado, Winslow struck early with five runs in the first inning, three in the second and more in the third. Two runs in the fourth brought the 10 run mercy rule into effect but the Bulldogs had to bat in the top of the fifth and added the final three runs.
Bubba Cuellar was two for two at the plate. Gomez was one for one. Levi Smith was two for three with a double and a home run. Estelle was also two for three.
