"Uses of Birds by Native Americans" was the topic of discussion at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce last Friday evening. The expert on this subject was Miles Gilbert PH.D. a professional archaeologist. His specialty is osto-archaeology, the analysis of animal bones. Gilbert co-authored "Avian Ostelogy" a paperback currently listed on Amazon. He spoke for 90 minutes on the myriad uses of birds that Native Americans had. He said that every part was used in very inventive ways, and the location of the recovered bones by archaeologists today documents the past micro-climates of Native American habitats. The lecture was sponsored by the Homolovi Archaeological Society, the Winslow Chapter of the Arizona Archaeology Society. This lecture series is scheduled for the third Thursday of the month at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce located at 523 W. Second Street in Winslow.
