Bulldogs beat Hopi and Blue Ridge in non-regional action
WINSLOW and LAKESIDE, Ariz. -The Winslow Bulldogs won a pair of non-regional baseball games on Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs defeated the Hopi Bruins 18-0 on Friday in Winslow. On Saturday, the Bulldogs bested the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 13-8 at Lakeside. The wins left the Bulldogs with a 17-4 record for the season.
Johnnie Woods worked the five innings in the win over Hopi and allowed only two hits and a walk while fanning nine. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Ty Hancock got the win against Blue Ridge, working five innings and giving up eight runs, seven of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks. Huerta relieved and gave up no runs on one hit in two innings of work.
Winslow scored twice in the first inning on two hits and a walk and broke the game open in the third when they plated six runs on six hits. The 10-run fourth inning put the game totally out of reach and the mercy rule into effect.
The Bulldogs had 13 hits against Hopi. Anthony Huerta was two for two with a double. Jevon Estelle, Woods and Sedale Flanagan were all one for one. Hancock was two for three with both hits being home runs. Levi Smith was two for tour with a home run and a double. Tommy Gomez was two for four with a double. Vittorio Sells was one for two with a home run. Rhett Hardy was one for two with a triple.
On Saturday, Blue Ridge took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on two hits and an error. The Bulldogs came back with six runs in the top of the second to take a 6-2 lead. Winslow had seven hits in that key rally. Blue Ridge tied the game in the bottom of the third frame on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The Bulldogs went back in front in the fourth 7-6 on a walk and a hit and increased the lead to 9-6 in the top of the fifth on two hits and an error. Blue Ridge cut the lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. The Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the sixth on two hits and two errors and twice again in the top of the seventh on four hits and a walk.
Gomez was three for four at the plate with a pair of doubles. Huerta was two for three with a double. Hancock was three for five with a double. Levi Smith was also three for five. Sells was two for four. Estelle was two for five with a triple. Matthew Smith was one for five.
