Lady Bulldogs edge Blue Ridge in 12 innings, defeat Lady Yellowjackets

BLUE RIDGE and WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs edged the Blue Ridge Lady Yellowjackets 9-7 in an exciting 12 inning non-regional softball game played on Monday, then defeated the Show Low Lady Cougars 12-2 on Tuesday in Winslow. The wins improved Winslow's record to a perfect 9-0 for the season with the Las Vegas Tournament slated for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Against Blue Ridge on Monday, the Lady Bulldogs used a four-run 12th inning to clinch the victory as Blue Ridge then scored twice in the bottom of that inning. Kelly Pugh went the distance for the win and was touched for seven runs, six of which were earned, on 17 hits and five walks. She had eight strikeouts.

Winslow took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk, a sacrifice and a passed ball. The margin grew to

2-0 in the top of the third on a single and an error but Blue Ridge took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame on two hits, a walk and an error. A solo home run by Lady Yellowjacket shortstop Cami Williams in the bottom of the fifth increased the lead to 4-2.

The Lady Bulldogs got a run back in the top of the sixth on three singles and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on four more hits. Blue Ridge knotted the score in the bottom of the frame on two singles and an error that sent the game into extra innings.

It wasn't until the top of the 12th that either team scored again when Winslow plated four runs on four hits and two errors to take a

9-5 lead. Blue Ridge got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a single and Williams' second home run of the game. Pugh got the next batter out to end the game.

Bernice Gover was four for six for Winslow. Gabby Stacey, Kyli Parsons and Melissa Jacobs were each three for five with Stacey having a triple. Arianna Huerta and Felicia Nagle were two for six. Rebecca Perez was one for six with a home run. Pugh was one for six with a double. Mireya Ulibarri was one for seven.

Pugh got the win against Show Low on Tuesday, working four innings and allowing two earned runs on just two hits and no walks. She fanned five batters. Jennifer Yazzie worked two innings in relief and did not allow a run on one hit and two walks.

The Lady Bulldogs took the lead with a run in the first inning on a single by Ulibarri, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Bernice Gover. The margin was increased to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a double by Kyli Parsons, an error and singles by Ulibarri, Yazzie and Nagle and another error.

Show Low cut the margin to 5-1 in the top of the third on a single by Charity Poteet and an error. The Lady Bulldogs plated four in the bottom of the frame to lead 9-1. Arianna Huerta, Gabby Stacey, Ulibarri and Gover singled in the rally and Yazzie had a double. Show Low scored in the top of the fifth on a hit and an error.

Winslow increased the margin to 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Ulibarri and a home run by Yazzie, then ended the game on the 10 run "mercy" rule in the bottom of the sixth on an error and Ulibarri's fifth single of the game.

Ulibarri led the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with her five for five night. Yazzie was also perfect at three for three with a double and a home run. Nagle was two for two as was Parsons with a pair of doubles. Mallory Smith was one for one. Gover was one for two. Huerta and Perez were one for four and Stacey was one for five.
