SNOWFLAKE, Ariz. - The Snowflake Lobos handed the Winslow Bulldogs their first loss of the season 37-12 in a non-regional football game played in Snowflake on Friday. The win was Snowflake's third in as many outings. Winslow fell to 2-1 for the season.
The Lobos only need 30 seconds to get on the scoreboard on a 77 yard pass from Tom Walker to Robby Martindale. Martindale booted the conversion for a 7-0 early lead.
The Snowflake defense got the next points on a safety when Winslow quarterback Kraig Shirley was called for intentional grounding in the end midway through the first quarter. The score increased the Snowflake lead to 9-0.
The Walker to Martindale combination accounted for Snowflake's next touchdown with 10:47 left in the second quarter. The pass covered 16 yards and the conversion increased the lead to 16-0.
Winslow got onto the scoreboard with approximately five minutes left in the half on a three yard run by Chayse Russell to cap a 66 yard drive. The conversion failed and Snowflake still led 16-6.
The Lobos scored on a long, controversial play as the first half ended. Walker lofted a pass to Martindale with just four seconds on the clock. Winslow fans thought the receiver was down, but that was not the case and Martindale continued to run and scored on the 68 yard play. His conversion gave the Lobos a 23-6 half time lead.
Brad Hudson scored on a one yard run with 8:06 left in the third quarter to increase the Snowflake lead to 30-6 after the conversion.
Walker completed the Snowflake scoring midway through the third period on a 79 yard run. The conversion increased the lead to a commanding 37-6.
Winslow scored the final points of the game with just 2:11 left in the third quarter on an eight yard pass from Shirley to Tevin Renfro. The conversion failed and the 37-12 final score was on the boards. The teams battled through a scoreless fourth quarter.
Snowflake dominated the game statistically as well with 407 yards of total offense to just 185 for Winslow. The Lobos rushed for 172 yards and passed for 234. Winslow had 50 yards rushing and 135 passing.
Winslow will open its 3A North Region competition on Friday on the road against the Ganado Hornets. The Hornets did not play on Sept. 11 and will come into Friday's game with a 0-2 record.
