Winslow Bulldogs to host five grid games, three regional affairs
WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs football team will host five regular season games during the 2009 season. Three of the games are 3A North Region contests with three of the five road games also being regional affairs. There is also a possibility that Winslow could again host a first round playoff game in the Arizona 3A Conference playoffs.
The Bulldogs made their first home appearance on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. in a controlled scrimmage with the Show Low Cougars of the 3A East Region. That action will be followed by a pair of non-regional contests to open the season at Emil Nasser Stadium.
The Round Valley Elks came to Winslow on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. to begin regular season play. The Elks are a member of the powerful 3A East Region and frequent contenders for a state title. All of Winslow's home games are slated for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
The Bulldogs will host a game with the Flagstaff Sinagua Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 4 for their second regular season game. The Mustangs are a 4A Conference team which should provide a challenge for the Bulldogs. Considering the lesser travel involved one might anticipate non-conference games with Flagstaff schools in the future.
Arch-rival Snowflake will be Winslow's first road test on Friday, Sept. 11. The Lobos are members of the tough 3A East Region and perennial state playoff contenders. That game is also slated for a 7 p.m. start.
The first 3A North Region contest of the season for the Bulldogs will be on the road against the Ganado Hornets on Friday, Sept. 18. This contest is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The Hornets have been a frequent playoff berth team from the region in recent years.
Winslow's first home 3A North Region game will also be Homecoming for the Bulldogs against the Chinle Wildcats. That contest is slated for Friday, Sept. 25 with a 7 p.m. kickoff and probably an extended halftime ceremony.
Two more 3A North Region games will begin the October section of the schedule. The first will be at Holbrook against the Roadrunners in a contest against an archrival and likely playoff berth opponent. Holbrook is expected to be a team likely to earn a spot in the state playoffs. The Window Rock Scouts will be in Winslow on Friday, Oct. 9 in a contest between teams that were playoff opponents last season.
The Sedona Red Rock Scorpions will host the Bulldogs in Sedona on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. This is the only non-regional game that will be figured into the Arizona Interscholastic Association's (AIA) power point system. The Scorpions are members of the 3A West Region.
Winslow's last regular season road game will be at Tuba City on Friday, Oct. 23. This game is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
The Warriors are likely to be contenders for a playoff berth from the 3A North Region.
The final regular season game will be a 3A North Region affair on Friday, Oct. 30 at Emil Nasser Stadium against the Monument Valley Mustangs. This contest could have serious playoff implications for both teams.
The first game of the 3A Conference Playoffs is slated for a 7 p.m. start on Saturday, Nov. 6 with the opponents and game sites to be determined by the AIA power point system. Winslow should be a serious contender for the hosting of this contest.
The rest of the playoffs are slated for games on Saturdays Nov. 13, 20 and 28 with the teams and game sites to be determined.
