Bulldogs route Round Valley Elks, 28-14

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2009 football season with a 28-14 win over the Round Valley Elks at Emil Nasser Stadium on Friday. Chayse Russell scored three touchdowns to lead the Bulldog offense. Quarterback Kraig Shirley was effective as a runner and passer and hit Tevin Renfro for both a touchdown and a two point conversion.

The teams battled through the first quarter without a score but the Elks took a 7-0 lead midway through the second period. The touchdown came on a 14 yard pass from Chantz Davis to Dustin Donaldson. Cade Mortgenson booted the conversion.

Shirley hit Renfro on a 40 yard scoring pass with just 2:25 left before intermission. Anthony Huerta booted the conversion that sent the teams to the locker room tied at 7-7.

Russell scored his second touchdown on a 16 yard run with 8:09 left in the third quarter. Huerta converted for a 14-7 Winslow lead.

Davis ran four yards with 3:49 left in the period and Mortgenson tied the score at 14-14 with his conversion.

Russell put Winslow back on top with just 22 seconds left in the period on a 19 yard run. The conversion failed and Winslow took a 20-14 lead into the final quarter.

The final score of the night came on a brilliant 73 yard run by Russell with 6:59 left in the game. Shirley passed to Renfro for the two point conversion and the 28-14 final score was on the board. The Bulldogs were threatening at the end of the game but were content to run out the clock and preserve the victory.

Winslow will host the 4A Flagstaff Sinagua Mustangs at Emil Nasser Stadium at 7 p.m. on Friday. Sinagua lost to  Florence 18-6 at Northern Arizona University on Aug. 28.
