Bulldogs trounce Warriors
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs clinched at least a tie for the 3A North Region title with an easy 54-0 victory over the Tuba City Warriors on Friday. The Bulldogs improved their record to 8-1 for the season and 5-0 in the region. Tuba City remained winless at 0-8 for the season and 0-5 in the region.
Winslow rolled to a 33-0 first quarter lead and had the 54 points needed to win before halftime. The entire second half was played with a running clock and the Bulldogs punting twice on first down deep in Tuba City territory and trying another long field goal another time. The running clock and the way the Bulldogs elected to play kept the score at 54-0.
The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown following a fumble recovery at the Tuba City 15 yard line in the opening minute of the game. Chayse Russell dashed into the end zone on the next play but the play was negated by a holding penalty. Kraig Shirley then hit Tevin Renfro from 11 yards out on the very next play and Aaron Martin booted the extra point.
Shirley scampered into the end zone for the next Bulldog score to complete a seven-play 68-yard drive on Winslow's next possession. The conversion failed and the Bulldogs led 13-0.
Wendell Carter ran 32 yards for Winslow's third touchdown of the first quarter on the team's next possession following a fumble recovery. The conversion increased the lead to 20-0.
Anthony Huerta had a 61-yard punt return for a score negated by a penalty, but Russell scored on a 22-yard run on the next play and the Bulldogs had a 26-0 lead as the conversion failed.
Huerta got a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown the next time he touched the ball and the conversion increased the lead to a commanding 33-0. That was the score at the end of the first quarter.
History repeated itself as Huerta returned the next Tuba City punt 60 yards for a touchdown early in the second period. The conversion gave Winslow a 40-0 lead.
Russell scored again on a 15-yard run. The conversion made the score 47-0 with over eight minutes left in the first half. At this point, the game began to be played with a running clock.
Renfro got his second touchdown on a 49-yard pass from Shirley and the conversion increased the lead to 54-0. With the running clock, this was the score at the intermission.
The Bulldogs punted into the end zone on first down at the Tuba City 15 yard line to end their first second half possession, then punted on their first play from scrimmage the next time they had the ball. The game entered the final period with the score still 54-0.
Martin missed a 37 yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter on the only real scoring attempt of the quarter.
The Bulldogs will play their final regular season game against the Monument Valley Mustangs at Emil Nasser Stadium at 7 p.m. on Friday. This will be a 3A North Region game and a win could clinch an undefeated regional season and title for the Bulldogs. Monument Valley will still have the possibility of tying for a regional title as they will bring a 4-1 record in the region to Winslow.
The Mustangs are 4-5 for the season after a 54-13 loss to Snowflake of the 3A East Region.
