SEDONA, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions 59-15 n Sedona on Oct. 16. The win improved Winslow's record to 7-1 for the season. The Bulldogs remained 4-0 in the 3A North Region. Sedona remained winless at 0-8 for the season. The game was a non-regional contest and left the Bulldogs with two 3A North Region games to play.
Winslow still leads the region but may not have the regional title wrapped up until their last game at home on Oct. 30 against Monument Valley. The Mustangs are one of two teams besides Winslow with a possibility of winning the regional title.
The Bulldogs were in total control of the game at Sedona as they built a 21-7 first quarter lead and had expanded their advantage to 49-7 by the intermission and were able to play the entire second half with a running clock.
The Bulldogs got three first quarter touchdowns by Chayse Russell followed by successful conversions by Aaron Martin. Sedona scored on a 35-yard pass from their quarterback who threw over 40 passes in the game. The Scorpions finished the night with negative rushing yardage.
Russell had scored on a 16-yard run to complete an 11 play 70-yard drive on Winslow's first possession, and then ran four yards to cap a 50-yard drive on their second possession. Sedona scored on the 35-yard pass one play following a Winslow fumble. Russell completed the first period scoring on a 28-yard run after Sedona had turned the ball over on downs following an unsuccessful fake punt.
Wendell Carter scored on a two-yard run early in the second period. Kraig Shirley hit Tevin Renfro on a 19-yard pass that increased the lead to 35-7 after the conversion moments later. Shirley ran 20 yards for the next score and Anthony Huerta ran two yards for the final touchdown of the half. All of the conversions were good and Winslow took a 49-7 lead to the locker room.
Russell scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a nine-yard run early in the third quarter and the conversion increased the lead to 56-7.
The Bulldogs scored again on a 35-yard field goal by Martin that was kicked on first down. The field goal increased the led to 59-7. The Bulldogs were mostly playing substitutes during the second half. The third quarter ended quickly with the running clock and Winslow leading 59-7.
Sedona got a 71-yard punt return by a speedy return man for their second score of the game. The Scorpions scored a two-point conversion on a pass on a faked extra point kick and the final score of 59-15 was on the boards.
The Bulldogs will play their final road game of the regular season on Friday at Tuba City against the Warriors who lost to Ganado 32-0 in their last contest. That will leave only a final home game against the Monument Valley Mustangs on Oct. 30. The Monument Valley game could have playoff implications. Tuba City is winless at 0-7 for the season and 0-4 in the region. Monument Valley is 4-4 for the season but 4-1 in the region and tied with Holbrook for second place. A win over the Bulldogs could cause a tie or a three-way tie in the region depending on Holbrook's remaining contests.
