The two top seeds of the Arizona State 3A Conference Football Tournament are still alive. The Fountain Hills Falcons needed a few breaks and a last second field goal to move on with a 23-20 win over the Snowflake Lobos at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert on Saturday. The Falcons hit a 36-yard field goal to break a 20-20 tie with just 2.5 seconds left on the clock. The loss made Snowflake the first 3A East Region team to lose to anyone other than another member of that region in the playoffs.
Blue Ridge remained undefeated with a 34-0 win over the Round Valley Elks. Both the Yellowjackets and the Elks are members of the 3A East Region. Blue Ridge will meet a surprising Florence Gopher team that upset Tucson Empire 21-0. The Yellowjackets will likely be favored in that semi-final contest, but the Gophers have proved that games are decided on the field and not in a computer or someone's notebook.
Fountain Hills will meet the Show Low Cougars of the 3A East Region in the other semi-final game. The Cougars ousted Winslow of the 3A North Region in a 35-28 scoring battle at Campo Verde High School before the Fountain Hills-Snowflake game. The Show Low win came due to an excellent first half and their ability to hold off an exciting Winslow comeback. Fountain Hills defeated Show Low in an early season, non-regional game and will likely be favored to do so again. This could be a very close and interesting contest.
The odds would appear to be with Blue Ridge and Fountain Hills, which were the top two teams in the power point standings. Show Low is a legitimate contender and the Florence Gophers are the Cinderella team left in the tournament.
