Bulldogs take 58-26 win over Monument Valley in state playoffs

WINSLOW, Ariz - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Monument Valley Mustangs 58-26 in Winslow on Saturday to win the first round game of the Arizona 3A Conference Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs improved their record to 10-1 for the season. Monument Valley ended its season 4-7 with a game effort against the powerful Bulldogs.

Mustang quarterback Jonathan Delmar had an excellent game and had some excellent passes not been dropped may have gotten his team much closer. Unlike the first contest between these teams, only the fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

The Bulldogs scored on their first play from scrimmage on a 71 yard run by Tevin Renfro. Jevon Estelle ran for a two-point conversion and an 8-0 Winslow lead.

The rest of the opening quarter saw no scoring until Delmar got the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a 30 yard pass to Shayne Begay with just seconds left in the period. The conversion run failed and Winslow led 8-6 going into the second quarter.

Winslow wasted little time getting into the end zone again with quarterback Kraig Shirley scoring on a three yard run. Aaron Martin booted the conversion and increased the Winslow lead to 15-6 with almost 10 minutes left in the half.

Anthony Huerta intercepted a Mustang pass and seconds later Shirley ran 24 yards for his second touchdown on the quarter with almost eight minutes left. The conversion increased the lead to 22-6.

The Mustangs were not done, though as Delmar passed for his second touchdown of the game on a 65 yard aerial to Preston Parrish. The conversion run failed and Winslow's lead was down to 22-12.

Winslow came right back to score on another Shirley to Renfro 15 yard pass and the conversion that increased the lead to 29-12 with just about a minute and a half left until intermission.

The Bulldogs took full advantage of the remaining time as Shirley intercepted a pass and ran it back 68 yards for a score, then passed to Wendell Carter for the two point conversion and a 37-12 lead. The half ended with Shirley scoring again for the fourth time in the half on a 42-yard run. The conversion gave the Bulldogs a commanding 44-12 lead in a game that seemed more evenly played than that.

The third quarter was played with no scoring until the final minute when Carter got the only score of the period on a 19 yard run. The conversion sent the Bulldogs into the final period with a 51-12 lead.

Huerta ended the Winslow scoring with a 30 yard run and the conversion increased the margin to 58-12. The Bulldogs did miss a couple of long field goal attempts.

Monument Valley scored on a nine yard run by Dakota Kay with 2:58 left on the clock that cut the Winslow lead to 58-18 and the Mustangs completed the scoring with just 58 seconds remaining on a one yard run. Delmar hit Parrish for the two point conversion that made the final score 58-26.

Winslow will play the Show Low Cougars of the 3A East Region on Saturday in a second round game. The Cougars are noted for a deadly passing game in what should be an interesting and close contest.
