Hopi cadets participate in leadership events

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Hopi High JROTC cadets attended Camp Navajo on May 14-17. There were 16 cadets who attended to become ready for their leadership positions next year. The cadets participated in various events, including obstacle courses, leadership activities and games. The cadets had fun participating in these events, meeting new people, and residing in barracks. The Hopi cadets participated with the JROTC program from Sinagua High School.

The camp had a barbeque on the evening of May 16 and parents were welcomed to come. While parents were there, both battalion platoons were divided into three squads and performed for the parents. So the parents received a meal and a show, which brought lots of laughs and joy to everybody there. They played basketball, volleyball, softball and had a tug-of-war competition. Everyone was tired and exhausted by the time the day was over.

On Sunday, May 17, all the cadets cleaned out the barracks, swept, mopped and vacuumed. They loaded their belongings onto the vans and busses. The last day was filled with a lot of emotion, pictures, and hugs. The Hopi cadets would miss the Sinagua cadets, but ended up inviting the Sinagua cadets to the Piestewa Drill Meet at Hopi High School this coming school year.

Cadet PFC Monique Chapman said, "Overall, the camp was a lot of fun and I learned a lot of leadership skills, I learned how to use a compass, and locate designated areas. I learned the importance of showing teamwork, and I also liked meeting new people, especially from another school so I can know how their JROTC program is."

"It was a lot of fun and I would definitely go back to Camp Navajo next year," she concluded.
