CHINLE, Ariz. - The Chinle High School Class of 2009 graduated 225 students on May 19 at the Wildcat Den with a near capacity crowd attending. The motto for this year's graduating class was "Cherish Yesterday, Live Today, Reach for Tomorrow."

The graduation ceremony began under the guidance and direction of class sponsor Carmen "Cat" Thompson with the assistance of senior class president Trevor Goodluck as the master of ceremonies. Doug Clauschee, Chinle High principal, opened with the welcome address.

The salutatorian address was delivered by Tisha Renee Mathis, daughter of Kenny and Trina Mathis. Her message to the graduates was "to succeed in life after high school, to cherish the memories of the 2009. This class is a special class of students. We have known each other since kindergarten. Remember the events of 2009, homecoming, proms, etc, and friends we made throughout the years."

After Taneesha Dee Watson delivered the valedictorian address, students who earned scholarships were honored. Special recognition was given to Autumn Skye Brown for extraordinary perfect attendance, dating all the way back to preschool - a total of 13 and a half years.

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. provided the invocation as well as the graduation address. In his address, he talked about succeeding in post-graduation endeavors. He stated that some will elect to continue their education and attend college and universities, community colleges or trade schools, some will choose to enlist in the armed forces, some will join the workforce.

President Shirley, a 1966 graduate of Chinle High School, told the students, "I am an example of what a Chinle High School graduate can do."
