'Just Move It' to begin family fun run/walk summer series in Tuba City

The "Just Move It" series is a campaign that strives to promote physical activity throughout communities across the Diné Nation by hosting an annual summer fun run/walk series. Many of our local communities have taken action about being physically active and healthy by Just Movin' It. For the past 16 years, the JMI campaign has always been Táá hwo ají t'éego - a Navajo phrase meaning, "it's up to you."

The Just Move It events allow individuals, families, and communities to support efforts in promoting diabetes and heart disease prevention and awareness. Today, our community members still look forward to these events because it marks a time to be sociable, active and health conscious.

This year marks the 11th annual JMI for Tuba City. The JMI series will include new events to promote and encourage healthy living. They include a 10K run event on June 16 in Moenkopi and July 14 in Coppermine; a "Horse JMI" on June 2 in Tonalea and June 30 in Hidden Springs. Community members are invited to participate in an evening of horseback trail riding (riders need to provide their own horses) Lastly, the JMI events will create opportunities to involve the family pet ('JMI and your dog').

At each 'JMI and your dog' event we will have educational sessions for pet owners to learn about animal health. To participate in the 'JMI and your dog' events, dogs must have vaccinations updated and be kept on a leash.

Over the years, our program has learned that offering additional incentives throughout the series is a motivational factor. Feedback from our participants was that the extra incentives were "fun" and "something to look forward to." Our program will continue to offer the incentive program throughout the series to returning participants as they increase their attendance.

As we enjoy seeing the attendance rise, we would like to encourage participants to carpool and practice reducing the carbon footprint. We are also inviting participants to bring their own water containers to help us reduce the use of plastic water bottles and "go green."

The Tuba City Health Promotion Program has established lasting friendships and partnerships within our local communities. To our participants, chapters, volunteers, and community partnerships, we would like to thank all of you for your commitment in helping to makes our JMI events a success. We look forward to seeing you, your family, your horse and your dog this summer.
