The Wickenburg Wranglers eliminated the Winslow Bulldogs from the Arizona State 3A Conference Baseball Tournament 11-0 at Surprise on Saturday. The Bulldogs finished with a 25-5-2 for the season. Wickenburg is 18-9-1 going into the semi-finals.
Wickenburg pitcher Dallas Mills held the Bulldogs to just five hits and two walks while fanning 10 batters. He only allowed two Winslow runners to reach third base.
Wickenburg took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Chad Peterson led off with a triple and Jordan Polley walked. Sheldon Murphy plated the first run with a single and the second Wrangler scored on a ground out by Dallas Mills. Caleb Crawford and Jimmy Crickey both singled to complete the scoring.
The Wranglers picked up a run in the top of the third without benefit of a hit. Murphy walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on another one. Crawford got the RBI.
Wickenburg added to their lead and took a commanding 11-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Bergman led off with a single, Kyle Fauley walked. Peterson was hit by the pitcher and Polley walked. Winslow made a pitching change and Murphy singled in a couple of runs. Mills tripled to clear the bases. Crawford singled in another run and the Bulldogs made another pitching change. Crickey singled and Fauley walked to force in the final run.
Anthony Huerta took the loss, working three and a third innings and being touched for eight runs on five hits, three walks and two hit batsmen. He fanned two. Tommy Gomez pitched to three batters and gave up three hits and three runs. Chris Reyes worked an inning and two thirds allowing three hits, two walks and a hit batsman.
Winslow had only four hits off Mills. Jevon Estelle had a double in two trips to the plate. Levi Smith and Bubba Cuellar were both also one for two and Kraig Shirley was one for three.
Murphy led the Wranglers with a three for three night and two doubles. Crawford was two for three. Crickey was two for four. Bergman was one for two. Peterson was one for three with a triple. Mills was one for four with a triple.
The Bulldogs have most of their team returning for the 2010 season and expect to be state title contenders again.
Lady Bulldogs win over Joseph City
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs opened their softball season with a 12-2 victory over the Round Valley Lady Elks in a non-regional game played in Winslow on Tuesday. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run "mercy" rule.
Round Valley took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by Tiana Tafoya and a home run by Jourdan Emnald. Winslow cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a home run by Felicia Nagle.
The Lady Bulldogs moved in front for good in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs for an 8-2 lead. Mariah Guzman singled, Mallory Smith was credited with a single on catcher's interference, Mireya Ulibarri doubled, Arianna Huerta, Jennifer Yazzie, Bernice Gover and Kyli Parsons all singled in the rally.
Three more runs in the bottom of the third increased the lead to 11-2. The scoring came on a single by Ulibarri, a hit batsman, a home run by Yazzie and a single by Guzman. The final two runs that ended the game on the mercy rule scored in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Huerta and a double by Gover and an error.
Mallory Smith worked all five innings on the mound for Winslow and gave up two runs on three hits while fanning six and walking none.
Yazzie and Guzman were both three for three at the plate. Gover was two for two. Huerta was two for three. Ulibarri was two for four. Parsons was one for two. Nagle and Smith were one for three.
Winslow will play Safford at 7 p.m. in one semi-final game. Safford edged Round Valley 2-1 in Saturday action. The other semi-final will pit Blue Ridge, a 6-5 winner over Snowflake on Saturday against Estrella Foothills, a 7-3 winner over Santa Cruz. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. The winners will meet for the championship on Saturday.
Lady Bulldogs 11, Sedona Red Rock 0
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Sedona Red Rock Lady Scorpions 11-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the Arizona State 3A Conference Softball Tournament on Saturday at Phoenix. The win improved Winslow's excellent record to 29-4 for the season.
Jennifer Yazzie picked up her second win of the tournament working the full five innings. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the 10 run "mercy" rule. She allowed just three hits and no walks while fanning 10.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of Lady Scorpion wildness and defensive mistakes to take an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mariah Guzman and Felicia Nagle walked before Yazzie singled home the first run. Kyli Parsons walked and Melissa Jacobs was hit by the pitch to plate the second run of the frame.
Mallory Smith singled to plate a pair. Kelly Pugh was safe on an error and Gabrielle Stacey and Guzman both singled and there were two more errors. Winslow scored its eight runs on just four hits, four errors, three walks and a hit batsman.
The bottom of the third saw the Lady Bulldogs increase their lead to 11-0 on three hits, a walk and an error.
Gabrielle Stacey homered to start the scoring. Guzman walked and Felicia Nagle and Yazzie singled. Bernice Gover reached on an error allowing the third run to score.
Winslow only had eight hits in the game but took advantage of six walks, a hit batsman and five Sedona errors to plate 11 runs. Yazzie led at the plate with three for three. Stacey was two for three with a home run. Guzman was one or one. Smith and Nagle were one for two.
Whitney Cooper led Sedona with a double in two at bats. Jenna Diaz and Taylor Tiffany both had singles in two trips to the plate.
Bulldogs 7 Estrella Foothills 0 in State
The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Estrella Foothills Wolves 7-0 in a first round game of the Arizona State 3A Conference Baseball Tournament at Surprise on Friday. The win advanced the Bulldogs to a second round game against Wickenburg, a 12-0 winner over Window Rock. The win improved Winslow's record to 25-5-2 for the season.
Roman Guzman went the distance for the win allowing no runs on just three hits. He walked three and struck out four in seven innings of work.
The Bulldogs broke on top 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Kraig Shirley reached on an error and stole second. Wendell Carter singled and also later stole second. Ty Hancock knocked in both runners on a misplayed fly ball single. He scored on a double by Levi Smith.
Winslow increased the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a triple by Anthony Huerta, a single by Hancock and a costly error by the Wolves. Jevon Estelle had a long sacrifice fly to drive in the last run.
The final two runs scored in the bottom of the sixth on a singles by Shirley, Huerta and Hancock.
Hancock was a perfect three for three at the plate. Huerta was two for four with a triple. Shirley, Wendell Carter, Guzman and Cuellar were all one for three. Smith was one for four with a double.
Other scores from Friday included Payson 12 Chinle 6, Fountain Hills 10 Holbrook 0, Blue Ridge 9 Coolidge 4, Globe 19 Monument Valley 0 Chino Valley 5 Snowflake 2 and Show Low 10 Safford 6.
Lady Bulldogs 15 Wickenburg 1 in State Opener
Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Wickenburg Lady Wranglers 15-1 an opening round game of the 3A Conference Softball Tournament in Phoenix on Friday. The win sent the team into the second round on Saturday against Sedona, a 3-2 winner over Globe. Winslow improved its excellent record to 28-4 for the season.
Jennifer Yazzie worked the first four innings for the win and was brilliant both in the circle and at the plate. She allowed just one bunt single for the only base runner in her four innings, walked none and struck out six. At the plate, she was a perfect two for two with a pair of doubles and two walks.
Winslow took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Gabrielle Stacey and Felicia Nagle, and doubles by Yazzie and Kyli Parsons. There was also an error by Wickenburg.
The margin grew to 8-0 in the bottom of the second on a single by Mireya Ulibarri, a walk, a single by Mariah Guzman, a double by Yazzie, a triple by Bernice Gover, a single by Parsons and a double by Melissa Jacobs. There were two Wickenburg errors including a dropped infield fly on which the out was recorded but two runs scored.
The game became a rout in the bottom of the fourth as Winslow scored seven runs on four hits, two walks and three errors. Jacobs, Ulibarri and Parsons had singles and Arianna Huerta had a double in the rally.
Mallory Smith replaced Yazzie in the circle for the top of the fifth and allowed a home run by Kelsey Olson for Wickenburg's only run. She allowed a single as well but fanned the other three batters. The game was ended due to the 10 run "mercy" rule.
Parsons was three for four with a double. Huerta was one for one with a double. Yazzie was two for two with two doubles. Ulibarri was also two for two. Stacey was two for three. Jacobs was two for four with a double. Guzman, Nagle and Gover were one for three with Gover having a triple.
Wickenburg had only one hit off Yazzie, a bunt single by Ellie Estrada. Olson had her home run and Tory Wickham a pinch hit single off Smith.
Other first round winners included Blue Ridge 4-0 over Holbrook, Show Low 13-5 over Snowflake, Estrella Foothills 7-1 over Tuba City, Santa Cruz 11-1 over Chinle, Round Valley 4-1 over Window Rock and Safford 14-3 over Safford.
