Holbrook boys, girls defeat Monument Valley in semi-finals
WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Holbrook Roadrunners defeated the Monument Valley Mustangs 15-1 in a semi-final game of the 3A North Region Baseball Tournament on Friday in Winslow. The win enabled the Roadrunners to win a berth in Saturday's final game against the Winslow Bulldogs, the region's regular season champion.
The Holbrook Lady Roadrunners also defeated Monument Valley 4-1 in the 3A North Region Softball Tournament. They earned a berth in the championship game against the Winslow Lady Bulldogs, the regular season champion.
In the baseball game, Austin Lozano worked on the mound for the Roadrunners and did not allow a run until the top of the fifth inning. After the final out was recorded in that inning the game was ended due to the 10-run "mercy" rule.
Holbrook started strong with a six run bottom of the first inning. There were only three hits in the inning, singles by Brian Hansen and Marcus Castillo and a long home run by Joey Aguilera. The home run was a three run shot over the center field fence.
The Roadrunners plated their other nine runs in the bottom of the second inning. That was more than enough for Lozano to hold for the victory.
