NPC schedules cosmetology testing for fall admission
Formal interviews and mandatory testing for admission to Northland Pioneer College's fall cosmetology classes will be conducted Monday, April 6, on the Winslow - Little Colorado Campus; and Wednesday, April 8, on the Show Low - White Mountain Campus, starting promptly at 9 a.m. in the cosmetology classroom at each location.
"This is a formal interview situation, so applicants should dress appropriately," said cosmetology program director Flo Finch. The 4 - 6 hour session will include interviews and tests for aptitude and dexterity. Successful applicants will be notified in July for classes that begin Aug. 3.
Applicants from St. Johns, Round Valley, Concho and Sanders will be tested at WMC, but will attend cosmetology classes in St. Johns, at the remodeled NPC/NAVIT facility near the airport.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old enrolled in an approved Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology (NAVIT) program or present a high school diploma, G.E.D. or proof of at least completion of 10th grade. High school students must submit a transcript showing completion of 10 credits including two English, one math and one science. Applicants must show picture identification and verify their U.S. residency status. Your local NPC campus or center can provide details about required documentation.
Enrollment in the program is limited. Early application is encouraged. Estimated annual cost for the 1,600-hour cosmetology program is $3,426 for full-time in-state students. "This is a very intensely structured, but also very rewarding, program," said Finch.
Cosmetology classes are offered in Winslow, St. Johns or Show Low. NPC's program prepares students to successfully complete the state licensing exams at nearly a third of the cost of attending classes at 55 other public cosmetology training centers in Arizona. Classroom and hands-on instruction combine to prepare the serious student for either the cosmetologist or nail technician state exams.
Completed application packets, including three references, must be submitted prior to the testing dates. Packets are now available from NPC academic advisors, from cosmetology instructors, campus/center offices or online at www.npc.edu/node/548.
Cosmetology goes beyond the basic hair cutting and styling and includes the proper use of cosmetics, hair coloring chemicals, manicures, pedicures, tinting, facials, ethics, and salon management.
For additional information, call program director Flo Finch, in Show Low at (928) 532-6161 or 1-800-266-7845 ext. 6161, or stop by the cosmetology clinic at any of the three locations.
