Bulldogs second in Estrella Foothills tournament

The Winslow Bulldogs won four games and lost one to finish second in the Estrella Foothills Tournament over the weekend. The impressive performance included victories over Buckeye 12-7, South Pointe 8-2, Flagstaff 12-10 and Estrella Foothills 13-5 before a 15-6 loss to Desert Edge in the Championship Game.

Winslow's first game was a 12-7 win over Buckeye. Roman Guzman got the win with relief from Sedale Flanagan. Guzman gave up seven runs, three of which were earned on 10 hits and two walks while fanning five in five innings. Flanagan worked an inning in relief and allowed only a walk. The Bulldogs cracked out 10 hits led by Tommy Gomez's three for four with a home run performance. Wendell Carter was two for three with a double. Anthony Huerta and Ty Hancock were both one for two with a double and Bubba Cuellar was also one for two. Levi Smith and Guzman were both one for four.

Chris Reyes got the win in the 8-2 win over South Pointe. He worked five innings and gave up two runs, neither of which was earned, on four hits and six walks while fanning four. Flanagan worked an inning in relief and allowed a walk and had a strikeout.  Winslow had only five hits but took advantage of eight walks and two hit batsmen. Kraig Shirley led the hit parade with a three for four performance that included a triple. Huerta was one for three and Hancock was one for four.

Winslow's third win was a 12-10 slugfest victory over the Flagstaff Eagles. Gomez got the win in relief of Sean Pugh. Hancock got the save. Pugh was touched for five runs in two innings on four hits and four walks. Gomez worked three and two thirds innings and gave up five runs, two of which were unearned, on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Hancock worked just a third of all inning to get the final out needed to preserve the victory. The Bulldogs cracked out nine hits and took advantage of 10 walks. Guzman was two for two at the plate with a pair of doubles. Huerta was two for four with a triple. Cuellar was one for two. Huerta, Hancock, Levi Smith and Gomez were all one for three.

The Bulldogs defeated host Estrella Foothills 13-5 in a semifinal game to earn a spot in the Championship Game.  Hancock got the victory, working six innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning four. Matt Smith worked an inning in relief and allowed an unearned run and two hits. The Bulldogs had 13 hits. Levi Smith was three for four with a triple. Huerta was two for two. Carter and Guzman were two for three. Jevon Estelle was one for two. Hancock and Gomez were one for four.

In the Championship Game, the Bulldogs allowed 10 unearned runs to score on five errors and fell 15-6 to Desert Ridge. Huerta took the loss, giving up 12 runs, only four of which were earned, on nine hits and five walks. He had a strikeout in his four and two thirds innings of work. Matt Smith worked two and a third innings in relief and gave up three runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits and a walk while fanning two. The Bulldogs only had five hits. Huerta was two for three with a double. Hancock was two for four with a home run. Levi Smith was one for two with a home run.

The Bulldogs are slated to play at Camp Verde on Friday and a double header at Fountain Hills on Saturday.
