The Chinle Wildcats are off to a good start in early 3A North Region play with victories over Ganado and Winslow in regional play in the young season.
The Chinle Wildcats defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 71-63 in the first 3A North Region test for the Bulldogs. The loss dropped Winslow to 8-4 for the season and 0-1 in the region. Chinle won its fifth regular season game in as many outings. The Wildcats are slated to play Monument Valley on Dec. 22 in Kayenta in another 3A North Region contest. Chinle improved to 2-0 in the region as they had earlier defeated Ganado 64-58. Monument Valley has yet to play a 3A North Region contest but has won five of its regular season games.
Winslow will participate in the Blue Ridge Invitational Tournament at Pinetop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 29, 30 and 31 for their only remaining contests until after New Years.
The Wildcats opened with a strong first period and led 19-7 going into the second quarter. The margin remained in double digits at the intermission at 34-22. Winslow managed to cut the lead by a basket in the third quarter but still trailed 54-44. The Wildcats finished with their 71-63 win in tact.
Karl Chambers led all scorers with 22 points for Chinle. Lance Yazzie was in double digits for the Wildcats with 17 points as was Brandon Yazzie with 11 points. Steven Hallwood scored nine points for the victors.
Winslow had three players in double figures in Dale Dixon with 12 points, Jevon Estelle with 11 and Lakota Shirley with 10 points. Kraig Shirley scored nine points for the Bulldogs.
