Lady Bulldogs place third at Gallup Tournament, Window Rock fourth

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won two games and lost one to finish third in the Gallup Invitational Girls' Basketball Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Gallup won the tournament with a four point victory over Clovis, the team that defeated Winslow in the second round. Window Rock, the other Arizona team in the tournament, won a game and lost two including the third place game to Winslow. The Lady Scouts finished fourth and gave Winslow a tough game in their final contest.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Kirkland, New Mexico in the first round on Thursday 60-47. The Lady Bulldogs had three players in double figures led by Kourtney Shirley with 17 points. Paige Shirley scored 13 and Mattea Begaii 12 for Winslow. Kirkland was led by Amanda Kerr with 12 points and Meghan Yazzie with 11points. The Lady Bulldogs took and 11-7 first quarter lead and increased it to 29-20 by intermission and 42-29 by the end of the third quarter. Window Rock defeated Santa Fe Indian and Gallup bested Silver City in other first round games.

Winslow lost to Clovis in the second round 44-38. Clovis held the Lady Bulldogs to just two points in the first quarter and led 16-2. The second quarter was evenly played but Clovis still led 31-17 at the intermission. Winslow cut into the margin in the third period and trailed 38-31 going into the final period. The Lady Bulldogs did outscore Clovis in the final quarter but didn't have enough to catch up before time ran out. Antiesha Brown led all scorers with 23 points for Clovis. Ashlee Pierson added eight for the victors. Kourtney Shirley and Paige Shirley each scored 16 for Winslow but only three other players scored, one with four points and the other two with tow each. In the other winner's bracket game Gallup defeated Window Rock handily by some 40 points according to reports.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Window Rock in the third place game on Saturday 57-51. Winslow took a 9-6 lead in the first period and increased it to 26-21 by the intermission. The second half was virtually even as Winslow added one point to its lead in the final period for the six point 57-51 win. Ashley Mitchell led the Lady Scouts with 17 points. Coralie Clark had 15 and violet Wood nine for Window Rock. Paige Shirley was game high scorer with 21 points for Winslow. Kourtney Shirley and Felencia Keams each scored 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
