Lady Bulldogs top Payson, 74-35

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs got off to an excellent start for this season with an easy 74-35 win over the Payson Lady Longhorns in a non-regional contest played on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The Lady Bulldogs were Arizona State 3A Conference Runners-Up last season and looked like state crown contenders again this season in their opening game of the season. It was a promising start for a season with great expectations.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 24 points in each of the first two quarters and had built a commanding 48-15 lead by the intermission. The scoring pace diminished in the second half but the Lady Bulldogs were never in danger of losing their overwhelming advantage.

Kourtney Shirley led all scorers with 21 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Paige Shirley of Winslow was the only other player in double figures for either team with 10 points. Kelsey Waugh led the Lady Longhorns with nine points. Mattea Begaii of Winslow also scored nine points. Winslow had 13 players in the scoring column while Payson had only six players who scored.

Winslow will host the Snowflake Lady Lobos on Tuesday, Dec. 1 before journeying to Gallup for the Gallup Invitational Tournament on Dec. 3-5.

The Lady Bulldogs will still face their toughest opposition in the 3A North Region where they will compete with defending Arizona State 3A Conference Champion Monument Valley Mustangs, the tough Window Rock Scouts and Ganado Hornets as well as the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners and Chinle Lady Wildcats.
