3A North teams start non-regional schedules

Six of the seven 3A North Region football teams will play non-regional opponents when they take the field on Friday, Aug. 28 to begin regular season play. The only exception is the Window Rock Scouts who won't play their first game until Sept. 4.

Defending regional champion Winslow opens against another 3A Conference opponent. The Bulldogs will host the usually powerful Round Valley Elks from the tough 3A East Region. As the season wears on, many 3A North teams will meet 3A East foes. The Bulldogs will host 4A Flagstaff Sinagua on Sept. 4 in what should be another tough challenge.

The Ganado Hornets, rumored to have a talented quarterback transfer, will open against 1A Canyon State at Ganado. This contest should give fans an opportunity to see what they can expect of the Hornets this season. Ganado will be at 2A Red Mesa on Sept. 4.

The Chinle Wildcats will host 2A Many Farms in their opening game. The Wildcats should be a contender for a playoff berth this season. Their second game on Sept. 4 is against the 2A Hopi Bruins, at Polacca.

The Holbrook Roadrunners will open at home against the Greyhills Academy Knights from Tuba City. The Roadrunners figure to earn another berth in the state playoffs and possibly be in contention for a regional title. Their second game against the tough Snowflake Lobos of the 3A East on Sept. 4 will be a better indication of their strength. That game, too, will be played at Holbrook.

After a night off on Aug. 28, the Scouts will open on the road at Many Farms on Sept. 4.

The Tuba City Warriors, another frequent playoff team, will open at home against the Hopi Bruins on Aug. 28, and then move to what should be tougher competition against the 4A Page Sand Devils. Both contests will be played at Tuba City.

The Monument Valley Mustangs open their season on the road at 2A Red Mesa and are off on Sept. 4. Their second non-regional game will be at 4A Page on Sept. 11.
