Bulldogs defeat Yellowjackets
LAKESIDE, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 9-7 in a non-regional baseball game played in Lakeside on Wednesday. The win left Winslow with a record of 13-5-2 for the season and 3-0 in the 3A North Region.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to see Blue Ridge tie the game in the bottom of the frame. Winslow scored on two walks, an error and a single by Ty Hancock. Blue Ridge scored without a hit on three walks.
Both teams scored twice in the second inning. Winslow plated its runs on singles by Roman Guzman, Vittorio Sells and Kraig Shirley and an error. Blue Ridge again profited from wildness and scored on five walks in the inning.
Blue Ridge went ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the third two walks and a double. The Bulldogs cut the margin to 5-4 in the top of the fourth a single by Sells and a hit batsman.
A four run top of the sixth gave Winslow an 8-5 lead. The rally featured an error, two walks and a single by Shirley and a double by Anthony Huerta. The margin grew to 9-5 in the top of the seventh on a double by Guzman and a single by Sells.
Blue Ridge scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on a walk, a double and two singles but fell short with the potential tying runs on base.
The Bulldogs used three pitchers. Reyes went an inning and gave up three runs on five walks. Huerta got the win in four innings of work in which he allowed two unearned runs on two hits and eight walks while fanning nine. Guzman got the save allowing two runs on four this and two walks while fanning three.
Sells was three for four at the plate. Shirley was two for three. Guzman was two for four. Hancock was one for three with a double. Jevon Estelle was also one for three. Huerta was one for five with a double.
