WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Tuba City Warriors 10-0 and 13-3 in a double header played in Winslow on Saturday. The wins improved Winslow's record to 11-2 for the season and kept them undefeated in 3A North Region play.
The first game was a 10-0 shutout by Jennifer Yazzie and Kelly Pugh. Yazzie worked the first four innings and allowed only one hit while fanning four and walking none. Pugh worked an inning in relief and allowed a hit and a walk.
There was no score until the bottom of the third when the Lady Bulldogs plated six. Mireya Ulibarri singled, there was an error and Felicia Nagle doubled ahead of Yazzie's home run. Melissa Jacobs singled and Kyli Parsons followed that hit with a home run.
Four runs in the bottom of the fourth put the "mercy rule" into effect. Ulibarri and Arianna Huerta singled ahead of Yazzie's second homer of the game. There was a walk and singles by Jacobs and Parsons.
Ulibarri was three for three. Yazzie was two for three with a pair of home runs. Parsons was two for three with a home run. Jacobs was also two for three. Huerta was one for two. Nagle was one for three with a double. Gabrielle Stacey was also one for three.
The second game was a 13-3 win for the Lady Bulldogs behind Mallory Smith and Yazzie. Smith allowed two earned runs on five hits in two and a third innings. Yazzie got the win in relief working two and two thirds innings and giving up one run on one hit and two walks with five strikeouts.
Tuba City took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on three straight singles. Winslow tied the score in the bottom of the frame on singles by Huerta and Nagle, a walk and an error.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an error, a single by Mariah Guzman and Huerta, a walk and a double by Bernice Gover, a single by Parsons, a walk and an error and another single by Guzman.
Tuba City cut the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fifth on a walk and a single only to see Winslow score four in the bottom of the frame to end the game on the "mercy" rule. The damage included singles by Huerta, two walks and a double by Jacobs.
Nagle and Guzman were two for three. Jacobs was one for two with a double. Gover was one for three. Ulibarri and Parsons were one for four.
