3A North teams begin regional play

The 3A North Region football teams will meet for regional play for the first time this season in games scheduled for Friday. Only Holbrook (1-2) will be playing a non-regional team on Friday when they go on the road to meet the Alchesay Falcons, a team that already has two 3A North scalps.

Winslow (0-3) is at Monument Valley (2-1) in what may be the most important regional game. The Bulldogs have three losses, but they were all to powerful 3A East Region contenders who may well be state championship contenders. The Mustangs of Monument Valley (2-1) have victories over a pair of 2A teams and a loss to a good 4A Page Sand Devil squad. The winner of this game will have to be considered a prime candidate for the regional championship.

Tuba City (0-3) and Ganado (1-2) will meet at Ganado. Tuba City, like Winslow, has three losses but has played better competition than most region teams have. Their losses were to a team from Cortez, Colo., 4A Page and 3A Chino Valley. Ganado's losses were to Alchesay and 2A Red Mesa while their win was over 2A Valley Sanders.

The final 3A North game of the night will be Window Rock (2-1) at Chinle (2-1). This, too, could be an important regional game. Window Rock's loss was to Alchesay while its two victories were over 2A Many Farms and Greyhills.

The winner of this game will also have the best overall record in the region or be tied with Monument Valley for that distinction.

3A North review -

first week

The 3A North Region started its season with all seven teams involved in non-regional games. In fact, the teams will be involved with non-regional opponents until Sept. 19 when the first regional games of the season are scheduled to be played. Three teams from the region won their first games and four lost their openers.

The toughest game of the first week of the season may have been the Winslow Bulldogs entertaining the tough 3A East Region power Snowflake Lobos. The Lobos ruined the Bulldogs' first game on their new artificial turf with a 33-8 win on the new surface. The Bulldogs have a tough second contest as well when they meet Payson, a 26-0 winner over Fountain Hills.

Holbrook also got off to a tough start with a 29-7 loss to Chino Valley from the 3A West Region. The Roadrunners will host the San Manuel Miners on Friday.

Tuba City got smacked 42-14 by Montezuma High from Cortez, Colo. The Warriors should have another tough assignment against the 4A Page Sand Devils.

Ganado blasted 2A Valley Sanders 68-22 and looks to win its second non-conference game against 2A Red Mesa.

Window Rock fell 44-24 to the 3A East Region Alchesay Falcons. The Scouts will host Many Farms and hope to get their first win.

Monument Valley defeated 2A Red Mesa 27-6. The Mustangs will be looking for their second win against the 2A Hopi Bruins.

The Chinle Wildcats nipped 2A Greyhills Academy 16-12. The Wildcats may have the toughest assignment on Friday as they meet a 3A East Region power on the road in the Show Low Cougars.
