Hopi High School students celebrated graduation May 23 in Bruin Stadium.
Briann "Boo Boo" Laban is valedictorian and Jake Yazzie is the salutatorian.
Marissa Nevakuku, a former student of Hopi High, was the keynote speaker.
Hopi High Principal Glenn Gilman said that the graduation rate is in the 80th percentile. Gilman said that this graduating class is different because many students are focused on what they want to do after high school.
Gilman said that the graduation ceremony is usually routine, but the things that are different each year are the class motto, song, flower, colors, theme, character and sponsors.
"They are strong, independent thinkers who know what they want and how to get there," Gilman said about this year's graduating seniors.
Gilman said the two most important scholarships are the Gate's Millennium Scholarship and the Manuelito Scholarship. Laban received the Gate's Millennium Scholarship. It's a scholarship that pays for four years of university. Jake Yazzie is expected to receive the Manuelito Scholarship.
