Chinle Boys, Monument Valley girls place second
The Winslow Bulldogs had a outstanding showing in the 3A north track and field championships May 3 at Monument Valley high school winning both the men's and women's divisions.
The Bulldog boys team finished with 149.5 points, just two and a half points ahead of the Chinle Wildcats with 147, Monument Valley finished third with 118 points.
The Lady Bulldogs had an easier time coasting to a 169 point victory over Monument Valley, who finished second with 131.5 points. Tuba City came in third with 110 points.
Chinle senior Courtney Norberto took first in the women's 100-meter dash with a 13.57 second run, putting her ahead of Winslow's Alannah Alexander (13.73) and Janae Cantrell (13.83). She also had a victory in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 17.14, putting her ahead of Monument Valleys Kierston Miler (19.13) and Winslow's Hattie Peterson (19.21).
Winslow's Cantrell (27.84) crossed the finish line just ahead of Chinle's Norberto (28.33) and teammate Alexander (29.39) in third.
Capping off a great meet, she won her third event of the day in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.75, beating out Holbrook's Danielle Tapaha (53.93) and Monument Valley's Sabrina Seaton (54.88).
Winslow's Devery Willis won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.13 over Window Rock's Charles Yellowhorse (16.74) and Holbrook's McKay Tenney (17.65). Bulldog Matthew Smith took first in the 100-meter dash with 11.70 just ahead of Ganado's Stetson Slivers (12.05) and Winslow's Marcus Woods (12.33).
Smith also had a first place finish in the 200-meter dash with 23.49. Ganado's Silvers (24.66) had another second with his teammate Cody Miller (25.09) running third. Holbrook's Rex Self's time of 42.96 earned him first in the 300-meter hurdles followed by Window Rock's Charles Yellowhorse (43.87) and Winslow's Latorius Williams (44.28).
Chinle's Cody Terrell's time of 1:05.44 gave her the top spot in the women's 400?meter dash. She finished ahead of Winslow's Audrey Dickson (1:06.29) and fellow Wildcat Stephanie Johnson (1:06.43). Cody also had a first place finish in the 800-meter with a time of 2:32.22, it put her in front of Tuba City freshman Tatiyanah Johnson (2:33.58) and Winslow's Mary Ricks (2:33.94). Ricks got her first place finish in the 1,600-meter running a 5:48.17 ahead of Chinle's Reba Francisco (5:56.15) and Diandra James (5:58.99) of Ganado. Ricks' teammate April Belone got a victory for the Bulldogs with her 12:58.41 time in the 3,200- meter run. She was followed by Ganado's Diandra James (13.10.47) and Reba Francisco (13:13.78).
Artie Gonzales of Winslow keeps his season rolling with another victory in the men's 400-meter with a time of 50.55 beating out Monument Valleys Darwin Yellowhair and Ganado's Chad Singer. Lane Cowboy of Monument Valley's time of 2:03.37 in the 800-meter put him ahead of Tuba City's Ryan Yazzie and teammate Darwin Yellowhair. Tuba City senior Lance Williams (4:50.33) just beat out freshman teammate Billy Orman by .21 of a second to grab first in the 1,600-meter Ganado's Alvin Begay took third with a 4:51.34. Tuba City dominated the men's 3,200-meter run taking the top three spots were Ryan Yazzie (10:23.02), Lance Williams (10:29.57), and Billy Orman (10:31.21).
Winslow's relay teams had a good showing at the meet winning both the 4x100 and 4x400 men's and women's relays. The men finished in the same order in both races - Winslow, Ganado, and Tuba City. The Lady Bulldogs had victories over Tuba City and Holbrook in the 4x100 and over Chinle and Tuba City in the 4x400. Chinle's ladies won the 4x800 over Tuba City and Window Rock.
The Ganado men were victorious in the men's 4x800 with Window Rock and Chinle finishing second and third.
Winslow's Haley Brooks had a pair of first place finishes her jump of 14' 04.5" was enough to secure a victory in the long jump over Monument Valley's Deonna Dayzie (13' 08.50") and Window Rock's Melerie Tsabetsaye (13' 08"). Brooks second victory came in the triple jump where her best jump of the day at 31' 07.5" beat out Window Rock's Melerie Tsabetsaye (31'00.25") and Monument Valley's Deonna Dayzie (13' 08").
Chinle's Cera Yellowhair won the discus throw with a throw of 104' 06 besting Tuba City's Trisha Curley (97' 01") and Winslow's Cassandra Jackson (95' 04"). Yellowhair rolled to another victory in the shot-put with a 33' 09" throw, outmuscling Winslow's Jackson (33' 06") and Tuba City's Curly with a 33' 04".
Freshman Tia Dalton from Chinle took first in the high jump with a 4' 08" jump, Winslow's Haley Brooks finished second and Monument Valley's Alexandria Navajo finished third. Rex Self won the men's with a 6' 03" jump - just an inch higher than Winslow sophomore Tevin Renfro (6' 02"); Monument Valley's Lane Cowboys took third with 5' 6". Winslow's Trenton Ervien took first in the men's pole vault with a 10' vault, and Monument Valley's Nicolette Parrish won the women's with a 6' 06" vault.
Monument Valley's Byron Davis took the men's long jump with a 21' 03.5" jump just ahead of Winslow's Stacey Berg (20' 03.75) and teammate Tevin Renfro (10' 04.5"). The three also took the top spots in the triple jump with Berg outjumping Davis 42' 07.5" to 40' 04", Renfro once again took third with a 19' 04.5" jump. Bulldog Joe Larson's shot-put throw of 46'06" gave him the victory over Holbrook's Morty Jim (41' 10") and Monument Valley's Matthew Greyeyes (41' 07").
Vincent Begay of Tuba City won the discus throw with a 130' 02" beating out Larson (129' 08") and Holbrook's Olin Jones (118' 07").
