Nez and Gonzalez families invite the public to honor fallen heroes

BIRDSPRINGS, Ariz. - Judy Nez, mother of Sgt. Christopher N. Gonzalez, the eighth Navajo soldier to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom, invites family members, friends and the public to attend two memorial events in honor of "our fallen soldier and all who are serving and have served."

Sgt. Gonzalez, 25, was assigned to the First Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, Third Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division of Fort Stewart, Georgia. Gonzalez lost his life on May 14, 2007 in Salman Pak, Iraq.

On Tuesday, May 13, the Sixth Annual Navajo and Hopi Honor Run, Memorial Bike Run Stop dedicated a flag pole at the Junior and Betty Nez residence in Birdsprings, Full Gospel Church, five miles east of Birdsprings Chapter at 3 p.m.

On Saturday, May 24, an all-day program will begin with a sunrise flag-raising and honor bike run, as well as a memorial program beginning at approximately 10 a.m. MST, which will feature a flag refolding ceremony. Following a luncheon, a Gospel Singspiration will be offered as the closing event of a tent revival beginning Monday, May 19.
