Highlights from the New Mexico state high school championships

St Pius X 57, Kirtland Central 48

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico Pit, home of the Lobos, played host to the New Mexico 2008 First Community Bank State High School Basketball Championships where the No. 2 seeded Lady Sartans of St. Pius X (28-2) upset the top-seeded Kirtland Central Lady Broncos (27-4) to win the New Mexico Class 4A Girls Basketball Championship with a final score of 57-48.

St. Puis X led at the opening period 13 - 10. They continued to outscored Kirtland Central 14 to 13 to lead at the break 27 - 23. Both teams played evenly through the third quarter with the Sartans pulling away gradually to lead 42 - 36. Most of the fourth quarter scoring came from the charity stripe as the teams pooled for 18 of 26 free throws with the Sartans scoring 15 points to 12 for the Broncos as St Puis X coasted to a final 57 - 48 win.

The 2007-2008 New Mexico State Girls 4A Champions were led in scoring by seniors Audrey Dettwiller with 17 points with Courtney Tinnin and Mary Rose Paiz adding 16 and 14 points respectively.

Seniors Dayon Hall-Jones and Ali Hathaway scored 10 points each to lead the Kirtland Central Lady Broncos who fell short of an 18th state title.

The Lady Broncos advanced to the state championship game with a first round win over Belen 56 - 33, a quarterfinal win over Deming 67 - 44, and a win over Deming 64 - 56 in the semi-final game.

Texico 55, Navajo Prep 45

The Texico Lady Wolverines (28-2) posted a 55 - 45 win over the No. 1 seeded Navajo Prep Lady Eagles (22-7) to repeat as the New Mexico Class 2A Girls Basketball Champions. Brooke Bailey scored 16 points and Katlin Lusombre added 14 points to lead Texico.

Nicole Crisp had 16 points to lead the Lady Eagles, who defeated Tularosa (69-50) and the Rehoboth Lady Lynx (52-51) to advance to the title game.

Roswell 54, Shiprock 49 OT

RIO RANCHO, N.M. - The Santa Ana Star Center, home of the New Mexico Scorpions, was another site of the 2008 New Mexico Class 4A Girls Basketball Championships. The opening round game between the Shiprock Lady Chieftains (19-11) and the Roswell Lady Coyotes (20-9) ended with a final score of 54 - 49 in overtime.

Shanice Steenholdt had a game high 20 points to lead Roswell. Shiprock was led by Latrica Julia Barton, who had a team high 13 points.
