FLAGSTAFF - Don Petranovich, who has been coaching at Winslow High School for the past 39 years, won game #713 for the Lady Bulldogs who were victorious over the Alchesay Lady Falcons with a final score of 64 to 53.

His wins also encompass an opening round victory in the 2008 Arizona State 3A Basketball Championships over the Round Valley Lady Elks with a score of 54 to 46.

The Alchesay Lady Falcons advanced to the quarterfinals with a 52 to 43 decision over the Tuba City Lady Warriors.

Opening round highlights

Winslow 64, Alchesay 53

"I thought the key to the win was in our defensive plan. Our plan was to contain Lupe [and] double-team her when she went to the hoop," commented Coach Petranovich. "We played great defense. We did a good job, [so] overall, I am very pleased," he added.

The Lady Bulldogs put a stopper on Marie Lupe, the outstanding sophomore and Most Valuable Player for the Alchesay Lady Falcons from the 3A East Region. The Lady Bulldogs held her to just 10 points. In her stead, junior standout Noel Hinton stepped up for the Lady Falcons with a game high 25 points.

Juniors Chrissandra Jackson and Samantha Sam led the Lady Bulldogs (24-5) with 20 points and 18 points respectively.

Winslow is matched up with the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs (18-9) in the semifinal game of the 2008 AIA 3A "February Frenzy" on Thursday at the Jobing.com arena in Glendale.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a first quarter lead, 21 - 14, behind Jackson's bucket and three from beyond the arc, Sam had two layups and Raquel Singer added six points. Michelle George and Hinton hit on two treys apiece to complement Lupe's bucket for the Falcons as Winslow outscored Alchesay 15 - 14 taking a 36 to 28 lead entering the half.

Sam's steal and resulting bucket opened the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs as Lupe answered for the Lady Falcons early in the third period. Jackson's trey closed out the third period with a score of 45 - 36.

The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Falcons both exploded offensively with double-digit scoring in the final quarter. Lupe broke out of containment to score six points along with Hinton's nine markers only to be countered by the Lady Bulldogs' Gabriel Stacey, Cassandra Jensen, Paige Shirley and Jackson's sixth trey of the game. Winslow outscored Alchesay 19 to 17 to win the game with a final score of 64 - 53.

Winslow 54, Round Valley 46

Kourtney Shirley, who was selected to the Arizona 3A Girls North All Region, led Winslow with a game high 25 points in the opening round of the 2008 Arizona State 3A Basketball Championships over the Lady Elks.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs had a first quarter lead of 12-18 as they hit on a three play and a trey by Samantha Sam, Cassandra Jensen and Kourtney Shirley, who also hit from beyond the arc. The Lady Bulldogs continued to match the play of the Lady Elks in the second quarter where they led 25 - 22.

Round Valley outscored Winslow in the third period 10-9. However, the Lady Bulldogs scored 20 points in the final quarter as Shirley went to the charity stripe, connecting on ten free throws (13 of 13 for the game) to hold off Round Valley with a final score of 54 - 46.

Alchesay 52, Tuba City 43

Marie Lupe, voted Most Valuable Player for the 3A East Region Alchesay Lady Falcons, scored 12 points and Michelle George added 11 points to pace Alchesay over the Tuba City Lady Warriors (9-16), who were led by Tanisha Tso, winner of the 3A North Region three-point shootout. Tso scored eight points in the Lady Warriors' season ending loss.

Alchesay took a commanding 18 to 10 lead paced by Brittany Burnette and Lupe. Stephanie Yazzie, Angel Tacheene, Nicole Yellow and Danielle Hoover answered the opening bell for the Lady Warriors.

George hit three treys as the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Warriors 20 to 10 to take an 18-point advantage at the end of the second period with a score of 38 - 20.

The Lady Warriors' Amber Williams hit a three ball to aid in the scoring spurt of nine points in the third quarter, but they still trailed 42 - 29.

Junior Jessica Tsinnie and sophomores Tso and Tacheene combined in a last-minute effort to outscore the Lady Falcons. In the biggest quarter of the game for the Lady Warriors, Tuba City scored 14 points, but their efforts fell short as the Lady Falcons coasted to a 52 - 43 victory, advancing to the Arizona 3A Girls State quarterfinals.
