Lady Bulldogs win Winter Classic over Payson
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won the Championship Game of the Winslow Winter Classic 60-32 over the Payson Lady Longhorns on Dec. 20. The win improved Winslow's record to a perfect 11-0 for the season and left them undefeated in the 2008 portion of the schedule.
Payson was an unexpected opponent having lost their first game in the tournament 51-50 to the Santa Fe Indian School. They were advanced to the winners' bracket and a semi-final game with Monument Valley due to an unusual number of teams in the tournament. Payson defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 53-48 to win the right to play Winslow. Monument Valley defeated Snowflake 55-42 to win third place in the tournament.
Winslow jumped out to a 20-13 lead in the first period and had increased it to 35-18 by the intermission. The lead was 45-31 after three quarters.
Raquel Singer led all scorers with 14 points for Winslow. Kourtney Shirley and Chrissandria Jackson were also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points each. Christina Deaton led Payson with 11 points.
In other action, Pleasant Grove defeated Joseph City 55-20, Ganado defeated Chinle 54-42, Ganado defeated Hopi 56-52 and Greyhills defeated Coconino 44-39.
The All Tournament Team was announced and included Kourtney Shirley, Raquel Singer and Gabrielle Stacey of Winslow, Jessica Tsinnie of Tuba City, April Johnson of Santa Fe Indian School, Cydney Figueroa, Christina Deaton and Kayla Morgan of Payson, Crystal Todachine and Bradley Nash of Monument Valley, Samantha Clah of Hopi, Jasmine Taliman of Ganado and Nicole Tsosie of Chinle.
Lady Bulldogs cruise to finals past Snowflake
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs waltzed past the Snowflake Lady Lobos 74-26 to the finals of the Winslow Winter Classic Tournament on the morning of Dec. 20. The win improved Winslow's record to 10-0 for the season with only the tournament final left in the 2008 portion of their season.
The Lady Bulldogs held Snowflake to single digit scoring in every period and led 22-9 after the first quarter, 39-16 at the half and 64-23 after three quarters.
Kourtney Shirley led all scorers with 15 points for Winslow, one more than Celeste Begay with 14. Those were the only players on either team in double figures with Raquel Singer a point away with nine for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lady Bulldogs beat Ganado
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Ganado Lady Hornets 52-37 in a second round game of the Winslow Winter Classic on Friday, Dec. 19. The game was essentially decided in the first quarter as Winslow built a 19-4 lead and held a double digit margin the rest of the game. Kourtney Shirley scored Winslow's first 10 points and had 12 in the period. The scoring slowed considerably after the first period as the lead was 29-18 at the half and 40-24 after three quarters.
Kourtney Shirley led all scorers with 16 points although she slacked off the scoring after the first period. Jasmine Taliman led Ganado with 15 points. Janassia Taliman was also in double figures for the Lady Hornets with 10 points.
Other Friday game scores in the winners' bracket included Snowflake over Chinle 51-44 and Monument Valley in a thriller over Santa Fe Indian Schoo9l 45-43. The Lady Mustangs trailed by double digits in the first half but closed the gap before the buzzer and led in the third quarter. The game ended with a series of lead changes in the closing minutes.
Losers' bracket scores included Pleasant Grove 41-38 over Tuba City, Greyhills 43 Hopi 38 and Payson 54 Joseph City 21.
Lady Bulldogs defeat Greyhills
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs opened the Winslow Winter Classic with an easy 58-29 victory over the Greyhills Lady Knights on Thursday, Dec. 18. The game was never close as Winslow led 12-4 after the first quarter, 29-10 at the half and 44-12 after three quarters.
Shernise Ward of Winslow was the only player in double digits with 15 points, but 10 Lady Bulldogs scored as opposed to only seven Greyhills players.
Other Thursday scores included Snowflake over Tuba City 40-46. Chinle over Pleasant Grove 49-38, Ganado over Hopi 51-39, Santa Fe Indian over Payson 51-50 and Monument Valley over Joseph City 85-30.
