Wildcats nip Bulldogs in boys regional action
Lady Bulldogs rally with win against Lady Wildcats

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Chinle Wildcats nipped the Winslow Bulldogs 74-73 in a hard fought 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Tuesday, Dec. 15. The loss dropped Winslow to 8-4 for the season and 0-1 in the region. Chinle had won the Cake Chevrolet Winslow Shootout Tournament two weeks earlier and the two teams are thought to be among the best in the 3A North Region.

The game was not decided until the referee signaled that a Stacey Berg tip in of a missed last second shot had come a split second after the final buzzer. Winslow led the close game 26-22 after the first quarter but trailed 43-42 at the intermission and 62-59 after three quarters.

Dale Dixon led Winslow and was the high scorer for the game with 26 points that included five three point baskets. Kraig Shirley with 22 points and Berg with 14 were also in double figures for the Bulldogs.

Denzel Harvey led Chinle with 25 points. Koyai Clauschee with 18 points and Mathius Claw with 14 were also in double figures for the Wildcats.

The Bulldogs will not see action again until Jan. 6 when they host the Holbrook Roadrunners in another 3A North Region game.

Girls game

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Chinle Lady Wildcats 56-49 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Tuesday, Dec. 15. The win improved Winslow's record to 8-0 for the season and 1-0 in the region. Chinle fell to 7-2 for the season and 1-1 in the region. The game was the closest call of the season for the Lady Bulldogs and was between two teams figured to be among the best in the tough 3A North Region and the state.

The game was tied at 15-15 after the first quarter but Winslow had a 33-28 lead at the half and had improved the advantage to 44-37 by the end of the third quarter. Chinle cut the margin to 44-43 before the Lady Bulldogs widened the gap again.

Raquel Singer led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points and had an 11 point second quarter that was responsible for Winslow's half time lead. Kourtney Shirley was also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points and Shernise Ward was just a point off with nine points.

Tia Gorman led the Lady Wildcats with 19 points. Nicole Tsosie was also in double figures for Chinle with 17 points and Taneesha Watson scored eight for the Lady Wildcats.
