Help Flagstaff students by donating through Arizona Tax Credit program

The end of 2007 is quickly arriving, but it is not too late to donate monies to the school of your choice through the Arizona State Tax Credit program. A tax credit donation to the school of your choice will reduce your 2007 income tax owed to the state of Arizona, dollar for dollar. The donation will cost you nothing since your donation will be returned to you when you file your state income tax return next year.

Tax credit monies are used to fund school-sponsored extracurricular activities that require students to pay a fee in order to participate. Fees include monies utilized for band uniforms, equipment or uniforms for varsity athletic activities, scientific laboratory materials, and in-state or out-of-state trips that are solely for competitive events.

Those wishing to donate are not required to have children. Anyone with or without children, married or single, is eligible to take advantage of this tax credit. The $400 maximum state tax credit is available for taxpayers that are married and filing jointly. A husband and wife that file separate returns for a taxable year in which they could have filed a joint return may each claim $200. For a single individual or a head of household, the tax credit is $200. You may donate less than $400 and be eligible to receive the state tax credit in the amount of your donation.

We recommend donating to the tax credit program. It's a win-win for all and it's a great way to help students. To qualify for 2007, donations must be postmarked no later than Dec. 31. Donations can also be made in person by visiting the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) Business Office, located at 3285 E. Sparrow Avenue. Donations can be sent to Erni Ruiz, Student Activities Bookkeeper; Flagstaff Unified School District #1; 3285 E. Sparrow Ave; Flagstaff, AZ 86004. You will be sent a receipt for your tax records.

For more information about the FUSD Tax Credit and which programs apply in Flagstaff, visit the FUSD Web site at www.flagstaff.k12.az.us and click on the "AZ Tax Credit" link. You may also contact Ruiz at (928) 527-6046 or by e-mail at eruiz@fusd1.org. Your donation will make a difference.
