TUBA CITY-Arizona Democratic Congressional District 1 candidate Howard Shanker spoke before approximately 150 Tuba City Junior High School students at a Native American Week assembly held on the afternoon of May 2.

During the hour-long presentation, Shanker, an attorney, discussed the importance of academic achievement and encouraged the students to strive toward entering college and even law school.

Shanker shared stories with students about how his recent Ninth Circuit Court victory helped protect the sacred San Francisco Peaks. He emphasized the need for future lawyers, especially those of Native American heritage.

Shanker, who has three children of his own said, "I like to think that, at least, some of the kids now have a better understanding of the impact law can have on preserving cultural beliefs and sacred sites. I was glad to have the opportunity to encourage the students to think about career paths and opportunities they may not have considered previously."

Shanker, a long-time resident of Arizona, is one of the founding members of The Shanker Law Firm. He has been involved in cases that have helped to protect the Grand Canyon, desert washes, the Verde River, the San Pedro River, and the Desert Bald Eagle.
